is still strong and still focused on doing what's right for our children," said Denise White, education director for the African-American Education Coalition. "We have a rich history to share." The community group started after the district's Equity Council was placed in limbo while district administrators adopted operating guidelines for the group. Coalition participants voiced their concerns at news conferences, rallies and school board meetings after the high-profile dismissals and demotions of several African-American administrators late in the spring of 2001, and the release of test scores showing that minority and low-income youngsters lagged behind their peers on reading and math tests. Rallying behind the slogan "for the good of our children," the group called for reforms and attracted the attention of State Education Commissioner Gene Wilhoit. The anniversary event, planned from 6 to 8 p.m.

Tuesday at Shiloh Baptist Church, 237 East Fifth Street in Lexington, will showcase the work of the coalition. Sen. Gerald Neal, D-Louisville, who sponsored new legislation that will require school councils to analyze the achievement levels of minority, low-income and special-education students, will be the featured speaker at the event..
