"I think it's a balanced attack," Perles said. "It's something we wanted to do. Some years you can and some years you can't. We happen to have a quarterback who can run and pass. We have a couple of receivers who catch the ball well and we have a few tailbacks who run the ball well.

Indiana's Ernie Jones had 1,265 yards in 1987, Ohio State's Cris Carter had 1,127 yards in 1986 and Williams 1,156 in '85. NOTEBOOK: Third-string quarterback Randy Vanderbush replaced Josh Butland as the holder on field goal and extra points. Butland (right foot injury) didn't dress. He has missed three straight games since being injured against Purdue and is listed as doubtful for Saturday's game. "We've had a problem with Josh trying to run with the ball if it's slippery on extra point or field goal attempts, so we think it's better to keep Josh off the field," Perles said.

Offensive linebacker Tony Briningstool replaced Carlos Jenkins in the starting lineup and responded with nine tackles and two pass deflections. He is MSU defensive player of the 15 Lions hurt; Long to get start? LIONS, from Page ID thought, Fontes said it is a "possibility" that Long will start. "I'll have to look at it and see if Chuck is fitting in and is confident with what he's doing," Fontes said. "I'll also talk to him. I'll believe him if he says he's comfortable" with the stretch offense.

Fontes said he probably would not make his decision public until game time. "I like to have a little intrigue, too," he said. Gagliano has completed 53 of 114 passes as Peete's backup, but has had little success scoring. He has been intercepted nine times, with one touchdown pass. Long has not played since last Thanksgiving Day.

lie had elbow surgery Feb. 2 and was on injured reserve the first nine weeks of the season rehabilitating his arm. Long didn't begin working with the offense until three weeks ago, and Fontes doesn't want to force him into action before he is ready. Although Peete has not been ruled out officially, he doubted Monday that he could play for at least a week. "I don't think there's a chance I'll play on Thursday," he said.

"The way it feels now, I don't see how I could." Peete suffered a sprained left knee, the same knee that was injured in the final exhibition game Sept. 2 and kept him out of four of the first five regular-season games. "It was pretty sore this morning," he said. "It's basically the same thing as the first time I hurt it, the same injury. touchdowns on 204 carries.

Junior fullback Clint Wagner has run for 996 yards and 12 TDs on 149 carries. "Mendon plays great defense," Warner said, "and they move the ball well on the ground and in the air. We can't let them have the football all day and control us with it." Mendon has shut out all three playoff opponents, allowing 105, 54 and 67 total yards in each game. The defense, led by linebackers Jason Dingaman, J. Wagner and Clint Wagner, has 25 interceptions this season.

Lake Linden-Hubbell hopes to force turnovers: The Hornets have fumbled 15 times in three playoff games. The Lakes' main offensive threat is senior running back Mark Gilles, who has rushed for more than 1,500 yards and scored 20 touchdowns. Since they will travel nearly 600 miles to Pontiac from the Upper Peninsula, the Lakes will skip Thanksgiving dinner at home Thursday. They will depart at 8:30 a.m., with a non-traditional feast squeezed in somewhere along the way. "We'll do all we can to keep it from being a wasted trip," Warner said.

BY SCOTT WALTON Free Press Sports Writer Mendon's first-year football coach, John Schwartz, knows all too well that his team is favored to beat Lake Lin-den-Hubbell in the Class state championship game Saturday at the Silver-dome. Schwartz says expectations for the top-ranked Hornets (12-0) run so high that it sometimes is a detriment. "These kids could win a ballgame, 20-0, and the talk would be, 'Why only 20W Schwartz said. "That's really hard on the kids. Going to the playoffs isn't surprising to us since we've been ranked No.

1 all season. But all along that's put a lot of pressure on the kids." This season has been a virtual joy ride for Lake Linden-Hubbell by comparison. The Lakes missed a berth in the state final last year, losing in overtime to Frankfort, 7-6, in the semifinals. "We've surprised ourselves a bit because we lost so many players from last year's team," said coach Ron Warner. "We came up one play short last year.

We've got another shot at it now, and we're thrilled. BY PERRY A. FARRELL Free Press Sports Writer EAST LANSING With the prospects of an Aloha Bowl berth in Hawaii on Christmas Day, Michigan State coach George Perles left the door open for his players to spend part of Thanksgiving at home. "I can't tell you what I told the kids about turkey and Thanksgiving, but we've talked about these things," Perles said Monday. "Unless you're playing football on holidays, it's not a real successful season." MSU's goal is to finish the regular season with a five-game winning streak and a 7-4 record, 6-2 in the Big Ten.

That would tie Pedes' second-best regular-season record. The Rose Bowl team was 8-2-1 in 1987; the 1985 team finished 7-4. The No. 25 Spartans play Saturday at Wisconsin (2-8, 1-6). The players are scheduled to have position meetings Thursday and practice from noon to 2 p.m.

Players not going home will have Thanksgiving dinner at the Kellogg Center. Players living within driving distance will be allowed to drive home after practice and spend Thanksgiving with their families, but must be back by the 1 :45 p.m. position meeting Friday. The Spartans will practice Friday from 2:45 to 3:15 p.m., then board buses at 4:10 for a chartered flight to Madison, Wis. This leads up to what is expected to be an official invitation to the Aloha Bowl to play Hawaii (8-2), which the Spartans are ready to accept.

"If we win the game there's no reason to think we don't get the bid," Perles said. "We think if we play and have success we'll have a chance to accept that bid. Do you think about it? Yeah. Do the players think about it? Yeah, but they keep it to themselves. They know I don't want to hear it." BREAK EVEN: MSU's offense, which returned just three starters, actually two Garr reminds defense about OSU's rally WOLVERINES, from Page ID like they ran us over.

Basically, our defense shut down. Let's say it was a realization film. We missed tackles and assignments; everyone has to concentrate on their bonehead plays and it'll be all business, no play." Ohio State was held to 116 yards total offense in the first half and trailed, 20-0. Then the Buckeyes totaled 353 yards and 31 points, the most scored against U-M in a second half. Only John Kolesar's 59-yard kick return and 41-yard touchdown pass from Demetrius Brown pulled out a U-M victory.

Quarterback Greg Frey threw for 192 yards, and tailback Carlos Snow ran for 112 of his 170 yards after haiftime. Frey leads the Big Ten in passing efficiency, and has completed 114 of 190 passes for 1,680 yards and 12 touchdowns, with five interceptions. Snow has rushed for 948 yards and 10 touchdowns. Scottie Graham leads conference fullbacks with 791 yards rushing, and his 70-yarder is the team's long run. Snow sat out most of the Wisconsin game Saturday with an injured right knee.

His backup, freshman Dante Lee, sprained an ankle. An OSU spokesman said Lee will play against U-M, but said Snow is questionable. Wolverines linebacker JJ. Grant said: "I'm sure (Snow) realizes what's on the line. I'm pretty sure that when I line up, Carlos Snow will be in the backfield." U-M will go to the Rose Bowl with a victory.

Ohio State could land a Rose Bowl berth with a victory and an Illinois loss or tie against winless Northwestern, a remote possibility. Should Ohio State and Illinois (8-2, 6-1) win Saturday, the Illini would get the Rose Bowl bid. The Wolverines would take the Illini's spot in the Citrus Bowl in that scenario. The Buckeyes would play in the Hall of Fame Bowl. The Wolverines also had their top tailbacks injured Saturday.

Tony Boles (right knee) is questionable but Schem-bechler expects Leroy Hoard to play. I "If you ask Tony, he would tell you he will be at practice," Schembechler said. "But that decision will not be, made by me or him." Schembechler said team trainers and physicians would determine his availability. Boles was limping after the Minnesota game, and isn't likely to start unless he practices today and Wednesday. He also has a pinched nerve in his neck.

The first time, they said it would be three to five weeks. This time, they're taking it week to week." Because it is less painful and there is less swelling this time, Peete said he doesn't expect to miss all of the Lions' five remaining games. "I hope not," he said.

"With these things it could be two weeks; it could be a week, it could be four weeks. It depends on how long it takes for it to recover and be strong again. "When I look at it, I'm lucky it wasn't worse than it was. But I don't think it's going to be ongoing the rest of my career. When we get into the offseason, it's going to heal completely.

Until I got hit on it yesterday, it was 100 percent." NOTES: The Thanksgiving Day game was not a sellout by 12:30 p.m. Monday, so it will not be televised in the Detroit area. Ticket manager Fred Otto is expecting a crowd of about 65,000. The Silverdome seats 80,494. The last Thanksgiving game televised locally was in 1983, a 45-3 victory over Pittsburgh.

The end around play on which Richard Johnson fumbled, setting up a Cincinnati touchdown, apparently is no longer part of the offense. Wolverines could become the first Big Ten team to win consecutive outright titles since Michigan State in 1965-66. No team ever has won three straight outright. The outcome of the U-M-OSU game has not determined the Rose Bowl representative since 1986.

WOODY VS. BO: It was 20 years ago that U-M beat Ohio State, winner of 22 straight, in Schembechler's fjjrst meeting with Hayes. The Wolverines were 17-point underdogs but won, 24-12. Call 222-5000 or 1-800-572-3670.
