Crum, who averaged 18 points and eight rebounds last season, said he would sign a letter of Intent Wednesday.

Crum was 55-for-105 on three-pointers last season, The University of Detroit's men's team ranked sixth in the coaches' poll, seventh In the media poll for the eight-team Midwestern Collegiate Conference. Xavier ranked first in both polls. Alternate Rose Bowl pans don't interest Michigan i Outfielder Fred Lynn on Monday joined pitchers Frank Tanana and Charles Hudson and outfielder Gary Pettis as Tigers who have filed for free agency this offseason. i Lynn, 37, hit .241 this season with 1 1 homers and 46 RBIs in 1 17 games. Pitcher Guillermo Hernandez and first baseman Dave Bergman are also eligible.

I Former Tiger Dan Petry (3-2, 5.47,. 19 games) also filed, as did Toronto outfielder Lloyd Moseby, Cincinnati catcher Bo Diaz, Montreal second baseman Damaso Garcia and lefthander Bob Knepper and third baseman Ken Oberkfell of the San Francisco Giants. deadline is Nov. 13. More Baseball Right-hander Mike' Schwabe, left-hander Don Vesling and shortstop Dean Decillis were pro- moted to the Tigers' roster.

He said he was given the money by Luther Darville, fired last year as director of the university's Office of Minority and Special Student' Affairs. Darville is accused of swindling nearly $186,000 from the office spanning five years. BOXING: Heavyweight champion Mike Tyson probably will fight Canada's Razor Ruddock, James (Buster) Douglas and Evander Holyfield before meeting former champion George foreman, promoter Don King said. MSU rushes to bowl over opponents SPARTANS, from Page ID weaknesses they do or don't find, likely will rely primarily upon tailback Darrell Thompson (838 yards, 4.6 per attempt). It's a matter of Thompson II for the Spartans, who faced Indiana's Anthony Thompson last Saturday.

"He likes to spill things outside a little more than the other Thompson does," Perles said of Minnesota's running back. "He's more of a pure tailback." Anthony Thompson's 60th career touchdown established an NCAA record last Saturday, but Michigan State limited him to 82 yards on 28 carries. Perles almost certainly would settle for similar statistics from Minnesota's Thompson. The teams are tied for fourth place in the Big Ten at 3-2. The Gophers are 5-3 overall.

"It's an important game because the winner is going to have a chance to have some good things at the end of the season," Perles said. Michigan State knows all about good things at the end of the season. Just check out the late winning streaks. UNDER ARREST: Defensive linemen Travis Davis and William Johnson and tight end Carlos Marino were arrested after an incident at a Lansing nightclub at 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

Basketball player Jessie Hall also was arrested, said Lansing Police spokesman Lt. Howard Clevenger, who would not reveal the charges. Perles said Monday that "nobody is off the team." He said he had no official word on what happened and refused further comment. AWARD TIME: Senior running back Blake Ezor was named Midwest offensive player of the week by the Associat-, ed Press for his 203 yards rushing against Indiana. "I guess it was a reverse Samson thing," said Ezor, who had a freshy razor-close haircut around the edges.

OTHER STUFF: Punter Josh Butland is probable for Saturday's game despite a sore foot. Fred Lynn 'a i lis -1 VC v'i Jeff Cameron of Hillsdale College, Robb Cook of Saginaw Valley State and Rachel Rogers of Wayne State are the Great Lakes Conference's players of the week. Cameron, from Grand Rapids, rushed for a school-record 295 yards on 38 carries, scoring four touchdowns in a 38-24 victory over Indianapolis. He is offensive player of the week, Cook, from Birch Run, is defensive player of the week for his 18 tackles (12 solo) in a 29-27 victory at Ferris State. Rogers, from Wixom, had 11 kills in a 3-0 match volleyball victory over Lake Superior State.

MAC PLAYER: Ball State linebacker Shawon Resprass, a senior from Detroit, was selected as the Mid-American Conference football player of the week. Respress, a senior, made 19 tackles, caused a fumble and recovered a fumble as Ball State tied Central Michigan, 13-13. Thirteen of his tackles were Thorny possibilities Michigan probably must finish unbeaten in the Big Ten to get to the Rose Bowl. But Illinois could lose Saturday to U-M and still play in the Rose. The Wolverines and Fighting Illini are 5-0 in the conference, followed by Ohio State at 4-1.

Should Michigan beat Illinois, but lose its finale to Ohio State, those three teams would finish 7-1 if they won their other conference games. In a three-way tie, the Rose Bowl bid would go to the Illini. All three would be 9-2 overall, and the team most recently in the Rose Bowl (Michigan) would be eliminated. The tiebreaking procedure then would revert to head-to-head competition, and Illinois beat Ohio State, 34-14, on Oct. 7.

So the Illini would play the Pac-10 champion Southern Cal or Arizona in Pasadena, on Jan. 1. Should U-M beat Illinois and tie Ohio State, it would finish 7-0-1 and win the title outright. Games remaining for the contenders: Michigan: at Illinois, at Minnesota, Ohio State. Illinois: Michigan, Indiana, at Northwestern.

Don Canham and I buried our hatchet, but I still feel more comfortable with Bo. I talked to him after the Indiana game and he said he had no problem playing Arkansas or Texas Texas and Arkansas are 1-2 in the Southwest Conference, which pits its champion against an at-large team. The Wolverines have preferred not playing teams from the probation-plagued conference in the past. Miami (7-1), Nebraska (8-1) and Florida State (7-2) are the hottest at-large teams available, assuming Notre Dame and Colorado meet in the Orange Bowl. "Miami, Florida State, the Big Ten runner-up and Nebraska are the big four," said Mickey Holmes, Sugar Bowl executive director.

"But we're not yet assuming Notre Dame is going to the Orange Bowl." Schembechler wants to avoid the at-large company for now, but realizes Illinois is no easy hurdle. "This will be a great battle," he said. "I have not seen many defenses more physical than theirs." Schembechler expects U-M quarterback Michael Taylor and inside linebacker J. Grant to play. Grant (partial tear of anterior cruciate ligament in left knee) has been out since being injured against Michigan State.

Taylor (sprained arch in right foot) left in pain late in the second half Saturday in a 42-27 victory over Purdue. "The report this morning on Taylor was favorable," Schembechler said. "We'll rest him today and practice him tomorrow. So that's good news. We're not taking X-rays.

But something was torn out there, and we took him out." Starting defensive tackle Mike Evans (sprained ankle) is questionable, but backup quarterback Elvis Grbac (bruised sternum) is ready to play. Illinois reported no major injuries. BASEBALL MEMORABILIA Green Bay Packers linebacker Tim Harris gets up-close-and-personal with former Michigan quarterback Jim Harbaugh Sunday. Harbaugh, with the Chicago Bears, was 16-for-30 for 203 yards in the Packers' 14-13 upset win. No dribbling allowed for Georgia basketball team Schembechler singled out the Illini secondary for its contributions to a defense he called the "stingiest" in the.

conference. A quarterback hasn't thrown a touchdown pass against the Illini since U-M's Demetrius Brown threw a six' yarder to Chris Calloway in a 38-0. victory last season. Coloradd running; back Eric Bieniemy has thrown the-only touchdown pass against Illinois in the last 43 quarters. The Illini have allowed seven rushing touchdowns and one passing.

U-M has allowed 12 passing, two rushing. "They have scored a lot of touch-' downs on us with passes," Schem-; bechler said. "The fact that we have controlled the run has been a factor." The Wolverines have 'held six straight opponents under 100 yards rushing, something they hadn't plished since 1982. "This will be like Michigan State week," Schembechler said. "It's a lot more fun preparing for a game that means so much.

Traditionally, we rise -to the occasion. That doesn't mean we'U win, but we'll play hard. 1 think the game's a toss-up." Schembechler will be coaching i against John Mackovic? his graduate i assistant at Miami (Ohio) in JJ.965. He won their only meeting last year. They graduated from Barberton (Ohio) High, but 14 years apart.

"Johnny's classy and' smart," Schembechler said. "I'll be happy for him if he finishes second. He should 1 be satisfied with second in this league, but I know he won't be." Nobody likes alternate plans. iVrmfi L. a.
