The Cubs won the Double-A Division championship this fall with a 5-0 conference mark and ended what had been an uphill climb By mick mcCabe Free Press Sports Writer If you saw Redford Catholic Cen-. tral play early last season and then saw CC this season, you might wonder about the imposter at quarterback.

Surely it couldn't be the same Scott Hauncher. "My lOth-grade year was the first time I really played quarterback," Hauncher said. "Last year, I was a little nervous. "They told me Ramsey was going to Wisconsin," Byrdsong said. "I told them they had to get him to a phone before he signed.

So we talked and talked and talked, and eventually he said his heart was with us and he was sticking with his decision. "I'm excited about getting Ramsey, but what I'm finding out is too many kids are hiding behind this 'Detroit it too tough, I've got to get out of town' thing. They've lived here all their lives and they've enjoyed it, and they're going to end up here anyway." A year ago, U-D went through a similar scenario when Derrick Groce of Detroit Northern announced he would sign with U-D. Groce changed his mind and said he would sign with Texas. He ended up signing with Oklahoma State.

A few months later, Groce asked Oklahoma State to release him from his letter of intent so he could sign with U-D. Later, he said he might sign with Minnesota. Groce is now a freshman at Odessa College, a junior college in Odessa, Tex. Also Friday, two Detroit King players decided to leave town. William Hutcheson, a 6-6 forward, and Patrick Lacy, a 6-8 center, signed with Louisiana Tech.

They had given verbal comrnit-ments Wednesday. University of Detroit basketball coach Ricky Byrdsong finally signed Ramsey Nichols, but it wasn't easy.

Nichols, a 6-foot-2 point guard from Benton Harbor, signed late Friday afternoon, about 18 hours after telling Byrdsong he was headed to U-D. Then Nichols changed his mind. The Titans also signed Kelan Ritchie, a 6-5 junior college forward averaging 18 points in three games this season at Lincoln About 11 p.m. Thursday, Nichols told Byrdsong he had signed. A few minutes later, he told the Free Press he was confused.

He said he hadn't signed and probably wouldn't until Monday. Nichols, who also visited Penn State, New Orleans and Wisconsin, had narrowed his choices to U-D and Wisconsin. He reportedly told Wisconsin he would go there sometime after he told Byrdsong he would go to U-D. "You know how sometimes you say something and then you start to have second thoughts and think about 'what-ifs'?" Nichols said Friday. "Well, that's what happened with me.

I said I was going to go to Detroit, but then I started thinking: 'What happens if things don't go I guess I was worried." After thinking about it some more, Nichols decided Friday morning U-D was the place for him. He is Byrdsong's first high school recruit. "I was comfortable with the coaches and the players," he said.
