10A-DEL RIO (TEXAS) NEWS-HERALD. Wednetdav. April 10.1974 CARL GUYS Still Swinging Coach C.D. Kirchner and his District 32-AAAA champion Ram golfers are doing daily duty here, using the facilities of the San Felipe Country Club and Laughlin golf layouts. The Del Rio coach said he has six boys eligible for the trip to Corpus Christi and the regional meet a week after this one.

He will work with Rusty Chalk, Chago Baker, Andy Falls, Craig Cates and Acton Brumley, the regular varsity quintet and with Steve Emmons who surprised everybody but himself by carding the second medalist honors to Chalk to earn a trip slot. Kirchner said he can come up with five boys from the six qualified lads to form the regional quintet or he can use the regular five and let Emmons shoot for only medalist honors. The format at the region meet permits a school to name a team and take the best four scores of the five players each day toward the official tournament total. Kirchner said that Baker, Chalk and Cates have had some real fine rounds and were they to get it together on tourney days, the Rams, with normal games from one of the other two or three players could have a real run at regional honors. At the moment Emmons has the chore of showing Coach Kirchner that he (Steve) is not just a one-day wonder and must prove his consistency.

Were he to really get his game line over the next two weeks, he could possibly be the fifth player on the starting quintet and enhance the Rams' chances. Also, by the mere token that Emmons has possibilities, the other two players, Falls and Brumley, are bound to concentrate more on their games and whittle off a stroke here or there getting ready. When the Rams visit Corpus they'll be competing in the quarter portion of Texas regionals with eight other district champs and runnersup. The Del Rioans are champions of the triangle district which includes San Antonio-Eagle Pass and our Queen City. The folks going to Corpus includes the elite schoolboy golfers from a line above Austin down to one below Houston over here to Del Rio and down to Brownsville.

There's some 90 boys set to compete in the regional golf meet and each comes from a district champion or loop runnerup school. Coach Kirchner and his Ram linksters have confidence in their opportunities at the region meet; "The ability is there," mused the coach, "if we can get it all together over the two days of action at Corpus." Rams Still Alive Tuesday's 5-4 decision over the Edgewood Red Raiders is sufficieftf'proof that the Del Rio High Rams baseball squad can play good ball and dispose of good teams. The Raiders dropped a 1-0 decision to Eagle Pass and then won the return contest something like 6-3. The win over the Eagles by Edgewood surely cut the myth that our firends downriver were absolutely invincible in loop play. If the Raiders can, then so could our Rams when they visit Eagle Pass later this season.

First, however, there's the business at hand Thursday with incoming Fox Tech. For the Thursday contest, the Rams can shove the Buffaloes out of their sharecropper's spot in second place and hang in there on the tails of the Eagles. With six games to go in the second half of the 32-4A play, anything can happen and the stuff that happens here at home would be much better if some of the students and baseball fans in general would come to see it. Tuesday's win was a dandy one and a tribute to sophomore Sergio Gonzalez and senior Jim Lee, the two righthanders who collaborate to hurl the victory. Sergio, who is good natured enough to grin and answer to the nickname of "Buzzard," did a great job starting and was, in no way, beat when he turned the ball over to Lee.

Lee came on and got the job done in businesslike fashion after the first Raider rapped a clean single. What was most inspiring was the 9-hit barrage led by Oscar Ozuna's two doubles and single. Give our hurlers some runs and we'll be in the thick of things right up to the final day of the loop season when we visit San Antonio to play Edgewood again on Friday, May 3. To date we have scored 31 runs and given up the same total in district for our 3-3 standing. Thursday's game had a bad taste reminder when we recall that Fox Tech nipped us 4-3 in the Alamo City on March 19, opening day of the loop race.

People For Popular Sports A brand new committee called People for Popular Sports is now part and an important parcel of Texas Citizens for Pari-mutuel Horse Racing group. Word from Austin tells me that the statewide steering committee has added some new members including Del Rio's own life-long friend of the horse Walt Wardlaw. There will be a most impressive campaign to legalize pari-mutuel wagering for the Lone Star State on Kentucky Derby Day, date of this year's election. Speaking of the great Kentucky Derby there's a special commemorative stamp devoted to horse racing to be issued on that racing date showing several Thoroughbreds ridden by jockeys in colorful silks charging into the first turn. Texas Citizens for Pari-mutuel Horse Racing and the inner committee of People for Popular Sports are both working for the common cause of supporting horse racing as a form of entertainment, as a great sport, the most popular spectator sport of all.

The verdict set the Rams up at 3-3 in loop play and moved them into a second place tie with their victims and Fox Tech behind the 5-1 Eagle Pass Eagles. Gonzalez and Lee collaborated to pitch a four hitter with sophomore Sergio going the first 5 and two-third innings and senior Jim mopping up the Raiders over the rest of the 7-inning route. Gonzalez gave up three hits and was charged with the four runs, one of which was unearned.

Del Rio's muscle at the plate showed Oscar Ozuna, center fielder, with three solid hits including a pair of doubles; Roland Zavala, first baseman with a long two-base hit and Keith Stone, right fielder, with two singles among the nine safe host hits. Edgewood scored first, a gift run in the opening inning by Danny Gomez. Gonzalez had gotten the Raider leadoff batter on a swinging third strike but Ram receiver Abe Cardenas let the ball through to the screen as Gomez dashed safely to first base. A fielder's choice sent Gomez to second and when Stone failed to make the catch after a dash in from right field on a sinking blooper by Bob Cruz, Gomez scampered home. The Rams wrested the edge at 2-1 in the home half of the second inning when Ozuna singled to lead off and Zavala belted his long double over the center fielder's -head.

Jerry Araujo's bouncy grounder handcuffed the Edgewood shortstop to drive in the second run. Edgewood re-knotted the count at 2-2 in the top of the Morgan Sparks Reds Victory SAN FRANCISCO CAP) JoeMorgan's tie-breaking, scoring single with tvto out in the sixth inning lined the Cin. cinnati Reds to a 6-3 victory over the previously unbeaten San Francisco Giants Tuesday night. Cesar Geronimo opened the inning with a triple off third when Gomez again got on, this time on a walk, and moved to second on a fielder's choice. Cruz connected for a double and the tie-scoring rbi.

Del Rio blasted in three scores in the third inning when Stone singled, Ozuna doubled, Zavala got life on a fielder's choice ahead of solid one-base shots by Araujo and Mario Hernandez. Edgewood came back to cut the Rams' edge to one run at 5-4 in the top of the fifth as Gonzalez hit pinch hitter Chuy Delgado. Delgado stole second and Gomez singled before Gonzalez got the next two Raiders. The young sophomore swiftie walked Cruz to load the bases and gave over to backup pitcher Lee. Fidel Pelayo Upcoming Race Meet Draws 37 Late Entries SAN ANTONIO-Hilda Lyons, executive secretary of the Alamo Quart erhorse Breeders Association with offices in the Milam Building, announced today that the Alamo QHBA's Dei Rio Futurity, a event to be run during the April 27-28, May 4-5 meet at Del Rio Downs received a surge of 37 late penalty payments to complete the current list of 97 entries.

Miss Lyons also hinted that the Futurity expects a late payment or two prior to the April 25 deadline when Starting commitments of $175 are due for those already registered. A final late payment is of the $1,000 category and with the regular starting fees will escalate the Futurity purse well beyond the originally-figured sum of 50 grand. "We are compiling the current list and figures to be put into today's mailing list," commented the secretary this morning. singled for two rbi's but Lee got the third out on an infield play to quell the Raider attack. Over the final two frames Lee faced eight batten, getting three on ground balls back to the mound, struck out one swinging and got the other three on routine infield plays.

David Martinez, Raider pitcher, settled down after the Rams ripped off their five scores and hurled shutout ball over the final three innings. Dei Rio hosts Fox Tech Thursday in a 4 p.m. league game.
