6B DETROIT FREE PRESSWEDNESDAY, JUNE 8, 1988 Local syndication pot is boiling with change Buying syndicat- pH thnurc ic a liit-anfi- 1 1 miss business, with far more misses than hits. For every "Wheel of Fortune" that comes along, there are a half-dozen Wil Shriners. Here are some current goings-on from Detroit's syndication BEsrc Cunthcr show, which was THE big game show before Vanna White Co. came along. No time slot has been set aside yet for the show, said Steve Antoniotti, the station's vice-president for broadcasting.

Speaking of Vanna, ratings for "Wheel of Fortune" are slipping a little in Detroit, as well as in the rest of the country. The show's still a real blockbuster but its audience is skewing a little older, an indicator that the "Wheel" could soon be rolling downhill. And volatile talk show host Mort Downey whose New York-based show went national last week, may soon get a local outlet. Downey has won some fame as a rude, right-wing loudmouth who employs foul language and insults his guests. WDIV-TV's noble expei iment with "The Street," the hold and innovative new cop show brought to you by the folks who created MTV, comes to an abrupt end on June 20. The show, which had been running weeknights at 12:30 a.m. between Carson and Letterman, will be I i Jl A moved to the deathly time period of 2:05 a.m. "It's a disappointment to us all because wc were in love with the show," said Henry Maldonado, Channel 4's program director.

Viewers, alas, were not. Ratings were poor. "The Street" may be ahead of its time. With its hand-held video cameras, documentary look, and emphasis on real-life talk, not phony TV action, the is talking to his syndicators. RATINGSZZZ: Viewers may cry out for more original programming during the summer, but they aren't watching it in large numbers.

Repeats dominated last week's Nielsens, while the few fresh programs on the air performed poorly. CBS's prime time broadcast of the Celtics and Pistons last Friday was No. 19 for the week, Henry Maldonado, Channel 4 program director, was in love with "The Street." while the LA-Dal-las playoff game was No. 36. ABC's "China Beach," which was renewed for the fall, was No.

31, CBS's "Tony Awards" was No. 42, ABC's "Liza Minelli: Triple Play" was No. 44 and ABC's David Bowie special was No. 63. The news was also bad for NBC's "Molly Dodd," which sunk to No.

61 in its new Wednesday night time period. Sadly, Molly is almost certain to leave show was startling, but perhaps off-putting. Channel 4 will move the tried-and-true "Hollywood Squares" into the 12:30 a.m. slot. For the fall, Channel 4 has secured the rights to "Group One Medical," which has been described as "People's Court" in a doctor's office.

The show dramatizes real-life encounters between doctors and patients and, because it needs no writing, it should arrive on schedule in early October. Executive producer of "Group One Medical" is Van Gordon Sauter, who many years ago worked as a reporter for this newspaper and not so many years ago was the president of CBS News, Two recent books on CBS News blame Sauter for bringing show biz values to the news division, a charge that's not likely to dog him at "Group One Medical." WJKB-TV, Channel 2, meanwhile, has signed a deal to bring the revived "Family Feud" back to the station. Comedian Kay Combs will host the the air for good after its summer run. CHANNEL-HOPPING: There is life at the "CBS Morning News." Forrest Sawyer, an anchor of that ill-fated broadcast, has landed on his feet at ABC News. He'll co-anchor "World News This Morning" with Paula Zahn.

A word on the impact of television, even public television. The writers walked out March 7 in a dispute centering on payments or residuals for reruns of one-hour television shows. Demand for such programs in rerun, or syndication, is declining, and the producers want to tie payments to a show's success in the rerun market.

The two sides also have been at odds over writers' demands for more creative control over changes made in scripts during filming and more on- and off-screen credit. The guild has signed full-term contracts with about 80 independent producers, but the alliance contends none of its large members has signed and the producers who did defect employ only a fraction of the writers. Los Angeles (AP) Striking scriptwriters ended a 12-hour negotiating session with television producers early Tuesday, scheduling a fifth straight day of talks as the walkout enters its 14th week. "We're not characterizing how the meeting went," Writers Guild of America spokeswoman Cheryl Rhoden said when asked if the continuing talks meant some hope for a breakthrough. The latest session, at the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers headquarters, ended at 2 a.m.

Tuesday, Rhoden said. The next round of talks was scheduled for later Tuesday, she added. The two sides began meeting Friday, Rhoden declined to comment on the Blanchard plans call-in show Gov. Tom Scott, the governor's press secretary, said WKBD was chosen to host the show for one reason it asked. "It was something Channel 50 wanted to do, and we liked the idea because it was a way to do essentially a statewide call-in show," Scott said.

"I guess the reason is nobody else thought of it." The exact format of the show has yet to be determined, but it likely will open with a few minutes of dialogue between Blanchard and hosts Glenn Kay and Amyre Makupson, then move into viewer questions for Blanchard by telephone.
