Algona (la.) Upper D« MelnM Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1965 Goes Fishing On Her Birthday, At Age 104 Mrs. Mary Stagman of West Bend, whose 104th birthday was Thursday of last week, started celebrating Monday when she went fishing. She caught her limit on the trip that day and outfished three other people in the boat with her. The former Mary Yaberg, Mrs, Stagman was born on Oct. 6, 1861, the year in which the Civil War began, at Guttenberg, Iowa, and is thus not only West Bend's oldest resident but also one of the oldest native lowans. When she was 12, her mother died but she and an older sister kept house and helped their father care for four younger children The family resided near the Mississippi River and also Buck Creek and flooding was often a problem. Mrs. Stagman remembers one time when the family had to husk corn from a flatboat. Mrs. Stagman was married in Wisconsin, then lived for a short time on a farm, after which sheandher husband operated a general store. All of the five Stagman children were born in Wisconsin. They included: Lee Stagman of Ephrata, Wash.; Mrs. E. W. Olson, now deceased; Earl Stagman, who died in infancy; Mrs. Goldie Wilson and Orlie Stagman of West Bend. The Stagmans moved to Burt, Iowa, in 1906 and two years later to West Bend, where Mrs. Stagman has since resided. County Medics Add Support To X-Ray Program Dr. T. J. Egan, of Bancroft, president of the Kossuth County Medical Society has announced that the county-wide X-ray program beginning Oct. 4 and continuing through Oct. 15, has the complete support of the County Medical Society. "Every person 18 and over in Kossuth County is urged to take advantage of this opportunity to have a free chest X-ray," said Dr. Egan. "It should be emphasized that the chest X-ray is not only valuable as a tool in identifying TB cases but also such common conditions as lung cancer, enlarged hearts, emphysema, abnormal diaphrams, and other serious conditions." The mobile X-ray Unit and the services it provides are made possible through funds derived from the Christmas Seal Campaign. The Unit will be stationed at "various places in the county, from Oct. 4 through 15. See the schedule listed elsewhere in this edition for dates and times when the unit will be in your area.
