DETROIT FREE PRESS AUGUST 2, 19S9 5D Tigers Down On the farm Dubois: No more looking back (Through Monday) Toledo Mud Hens (AAA) Player of the week: Benny Castillo, OF, Fayetteville CASTILLO'S WEEK: Batted .563 New Tiger almost quit in deep minors despair Brian Dubois is on the verge of becoming a major league pitcher, but not too long ago he almost walked away from baseball. The Tigers' left-hander, acquired from the Baltimore Orioles for Keith Moreland last Friday, is pitching with the Toledo Mud Hens, Detroit's Triple- JOE CYBULSK! (9-for-16) with 11 runs, two doubles and three homers. He had a slugging percentage of 1.250. He was South Atlantic League batter of the week. feci Farm report A farm club.

Dubois, 22, started last sea-, son with the Virginia Generals, a co-op team. He had been battling back from tendinitis in his left elbow. "When (Baltimore) sent me to that co-op team, I felt it was over," Dubois said. "I was really frustrated and seriously thought about going home." His record fell to 2-5 with Virginia and, just when it appeared his baseball career was over, he got the call that changed his mind. Hagerstown, then Balti at Hagerstown.

He was one strike away from a no-hitter, but gave up an infield single. LONDON TIGERS: Right-hander Mike Wilkins (3-1) pitched a five-hit shutout Friday in a 4-0 win over Canton-Akron. Wilkins has three complete games and two shutouts in five games for London. Outfielder Delwyn Young was released. He signed with Canton-Akron in the Cleveland organization and hit a home run in his first at-bat.

Outfielder Tookie Spann was called up from Lakeland to replace Young. Spann, the Tigers' third pick in the 1988 June draft, led Lakeland with 10 homers. Since being called up last Wednesday, Spann has batted .350 (7-for-20) with one double, two RBIs and three stolen bases. Left-hander Scott Aldred (Montrose) pitched eight innings Monday, his longest outing since coming off the disabled list, with a strained tendon in his pitching hand. He gave up three runs in the first inning, then held Hagerstown to two hits.

FAYETTEVILLE GENERALS: Right-hander Greg Gohr, the Tigers' first pick in the 1989 draft, is out for the season because of a groin pull. He was in Detroit Tuesday and was examined at Henry Ford Hospital. Outfielder Mike Davidson (Clio) asked for his release. Infielder Ron Howard was activated from the DL. He suffered a broken bone in his right hand.

Right-hander Ed Ferm has the Generals' only two complete games this season. Pitcher Mark Ettles is 1-1 with a 0.71 ERA since being called up from Niagara Falls. Ettles is from Perth, Australia. The Generals, ranked last in team batting earlier this season with a .206 average, have improved to .248, fourth in the South Atlantic League. tories.

He was 124 with a 3.67 ERA at Hagerstown. This season, Dubois was 6-4 with Hagerstown now a Double-A team and was promoted to Baltimore's Triple-A team in Rochester, where he was 3-1 with a 1.86 ERA. Dubois, who describes himself as a finesse pitcher, was not expecting a trade. "I was basically surprised," Dubois said. "But, I think it's a better move for me.

I look forward to a chance to pitch in Detroit, but that's not all I'm hoping for. If I get the chance, fine. If not, I will just try to keep pitching well here." He gave up two runs in seven innings Sunday in a 2-0 loss to Scranton-Wilkes-Barre in his first Toledo start. "Left-handed pitching you can never have enough of," said Joe McDonald, Tigers vice president for player procurement and development. "And this young man knows how to pitch.

It's obvious from his stats that he will become a very effective pitcher. "He's not a power pitcher, but he has excellent stuff. He has a good changeup and breaking ball and he mixes his pitches very well. There are so many intangibles that keep pitchers from reaching the majors, but he has those ingredients." Dubois, a high school All-America from Reed Custer High in Braidwood, 111., was drafted by Baltimore in the fourth round of the 1985 June draft. Maybe next year if Gooden stays healthy, if Viola rediscovers his Cy Young Award-winning form and if some other Mets players learn the meaning of dedication the Mets will win a division title.

But not this year. The Mets ended a seven-game losing streak Tuesday at St. Louis the team's longest skid since 1984. Even Darryl Strawberry, who has been known to miss a few wake-up calls in his time, questioned the Mets' desire this season. "There are more players interested in playing cards than getting ready to play a game," he said.

Though two months remain in the season, the Mets not only have to catch the first-place Expos, but have to pass the Cardinals and Cubs. The more teams ahead this late in the season, the tougher the task. Monday, when the Mets got Viola, Mark Langston improved to 9-3 for the Expos. Remember, the Mets supposedly had Langston all wrapped up before the Expos sneaked in and grabbed the Mariners' prize pitcher. could be costly for the Expos, who gave up three promising pitching prospects in a trade for a free agent who probably will end up with the San Diego Padres next season.

But they saw a chance to win this season and gambled. As Tigers general manager Bill Lajoie said, if you see a chance to win it all, grab it because you never know when that chance is going to pass your way again. The Mets grabbed, but a little too late. The Twins got pitchers Rick Agui-lera, 27, David West, 24, Kevin Tapani, 25, Tim Drummond, 24, and a player to be named for Viola, 29. Two or maybe three of those pitchers will end up in the Twins' starting rotation by 1991.

"What this does is give us a whole bunch of people to pick from (for the starting rotation) instead of having two make it by default," Kelly said. Weight A Minute, Now: what is it with National League managers and diets? First Dodgers manager Tom Lasorda sheds 50 pounds, then Mets manager Dave Johnson loses 20 and now Chicago's Don Zimmer is trying to take a few inches off his ample waistline. "Somebody told me that if I go on it, I'll be ornery and mean," said Zimmer, who would hke to drop 20 pounds. "If that's the case, I won't do it, because I want to stay nice." Nikon: Sour Grapes To Strawberry? Strawberry said he gets fan mail from former President Richard Nixon. AVQ AB HR II TEAM BATTING TIGERS, from Page ID two out in the seventh, he smashed a 2-0 pitch a few feet foul into the upper deck in right.

"That's the hardest ball I've ever hit off Tanana," said Baines, referring to a decade's worth of one of the league's finest lefty-lefty matchups. Tanana, seeking his first win in seven starts, had the 3-2 lead when he took the mound for the ninth. He was warming up to give the bullpen more time and perhaps induce a change of batters. "I'd thrown 130 pitches," said Tanana, still 7-9. "I'd shot what I'd had.

I let it all go in the eighth (when he got the final two of his eight strikeouts). "Because I haven't won in a while, the temptation is to want to pitch until I lose the game. But that doesn't make any sense. What if I wind up injuring myself by pitching longer than I should? "What it goes back to is a team game and a team concept. You can't win constantly when you get three runs.

You need offense. If you hold a team like Texas with that many hitters to two runs in eight innings, you ought to win." Mike Henneman relieved and retired pinch hitter Rick Leach. Then switch-hitter Espy, batting for leadoff man Fred Manrique, won a riveting duel. After fouling five 2-2 pitches, he doubled off the lower part of the rightfield wall on the 12th pitch of the at-bat. So Baines would bat again.

"Most of the pitches I fouled were balls," Espy said. "But in that situation, they were too close to take." After Espy's double, Gibson relieved and got left-handed Rafael Palmeiro on a first-pitch pop-up. Baines buried the next pitch far into the upper deck in right; Gibson slammed the resin bag to the ground as Baines circled the bases and the Rangers rejoiced in the dugout. "I made mistakes to Baines," Gibson said, "not only in location, but in pitch selection. I threw him a high breaking ball, and they pay him to hit mistakes like that." Gibson (2-6) made his first relief appearance since being removed from the rotation in favor of rookie Kevin Ritz.

He wore a jolted look afterward, the product of a season that has ganged up on him. He pitched well enough to win his last five starts, but got a loss and four no-decisions. Because of Fred Lynn's solo homer and Whitaker's shot, Brown was going suffer the type of loss Gibson and Tanana know well. But he became the majors' first rookie starter to win 10 games this season. Brown (10-6) won with the same hard sinker he used to beat Tanana here in April.

How many games could he win pitching on a thick infield such as Tiger Stadium's, instead of the pool-table fast infield of the Rangers' Arlington Stadium? Dave Bergman grounded to first on all three of his at-bats against Brown. The outcomes were more varied when Tanana faced Baines, the White Sox's all-time leader in homers with 186. He changed teams for the first time Saturday in a five-player swap. Tanana got Baines on a forceout with runners on first and second and none out in the first. To understand the kind of lineup Baines joined, consider that Ruben Sierra then hit a sacrifice fly for his league-high 78th RBI before Tanana struck out Julio Franco (second in the AL with 73 RBIs) to end the inning.

Baines broke his bat for an RBI single and a 2-0 lead in the third. He struck out in the fifth, then walked in the seventh. John Locker (Michigan) Chris Lutz (Michigan) Elliott Gray (Punt) Jett Peterek (Herbert) Dave Karaslnskl (Michigan) trying to avoid last place. Last July 27, the young and hungry Pirates were two games behind the first-place Mets. Though the Pirates couldn't sustain their challenge, they were touted as a team to watch in 1989. Instead, the Pirates have become a team that is almost too painful to watch especially for manager Jim Ley-land. After the Pirates lost three of four to the last-place Phillies, including a game in which they blew a 5-0 lead, Leyland said: "I'm sick of looking at it, to tell you the truth." "He's a big fan of mine," Strawberry said.

"He says he enjoys my talent." Strawberry said Nixon, who had his share of troubles with the press, gave him the following advice: "Don't worry about the media, because those people are just going to write what they want."
