"We had an industrywide slump set in in car sales starting in late August and early September," he said. "Then we had our own little strike in Canada. Then we had major costs involved in a couple of big new product launches. Chrysler meanwhile, reported its third-best July-September period ever, with earnings of $253 million, or $1.15 per share, compared to $234.9 million, or $1.06 per share, during the same period last year. On Monday, Ford Motor Co.

announced third-quarter earnings of $703.2 million, compared with earnings of $693.3 million during the year-ago period. Total third-quarter earnings for the Big Three automakers came to $1,768 billion, a 38.8 percent increase from $1,273 billion during the same period last year. "Third-quarter results were much better than the majority of people expected," said Charles Brady, an analyst with Oppenheimer Co. in New York. "Everybody was looking for a drop of 10 to 20 percent." BUT BRADY said the outlook for Big Three earnings is mixed.

"We may see a (sales) downturn, and that's bad, because you'd always rather sell more cars than less," he said. "But the one unproven variable on the whole domestic auto industry is their ability to make money in a depressed' market." Chrysler Financial, the company's lending arm, reported its best third quarter ever, with earnings of $55.3 million. Chrysler's share of the U.S. car market fell to 9.7 percent in the third quarter from 12.2 percent in the same period last year. But its share of the U.S. truck market rose to 16.5 percent, compared to 10.7 percent during the third quarter of 1986.

Chrysler's total U.S. vehicle sales dropped 7.8 percent from the year-ago period to 481,598. direction.
