"We had an industrywide slump set in in car sales starting in late August and early September," he said. "Then we had our own little strike in Canada. Then we had major costs involved in a couple of big new product launches. And we did, during the quarter, complete three acquisitions, the biggest one being (American Motors Corp.)." CHRYSLER ACQUIRED AMC on Aug. 5 for $602.4 million in Chrysler stock and $200 million in cash, plus related expenses. The company also agreed to acquire Renault's interest in AMC for a payment of up to $350 million, depending on profitability and sales volume. During the first nine months of 1987, Chrysler earned $951.4 million, or $4.38 per common share, compared with $1.08 billion, or $4.83 per common share, for the first nine months of GM Ford Chrysler By JOHN LIPPERT Free Press Automotive Writer General Motors Corp. avoided announcement of a third-quarter operating loss Tuesday by opting for an accounting change that boosted third-quarter earnings to $812.3 million, or $2.28 per share of common stock. Chrysler Corp., meanwhile, reported its third-best July-September period ever, with earnings of $253 million, or $1.15 per share, compared to $234.9 million, or $1.06 per share, during the same period last year. On Monday, Ford Motor Co. announced third-quarter earnings of $703.2 million, compared with earnings of $693.3 million during the year-ago period. Total third-quarter earnings for the Big Three automakers came to $1,768 billion, a 38.8 percent increase from $1,273 billion during the same period last year. "Third-quarter results were much better than the majority of people expected," said Charles Brady, an analyst with Oppenheimer & Co. in New York. "Everybody was looking for a drop of 10 to 20 percent." BUT BRADY said the outlook for Big Three earnings is mixed. "We may see a (sales) downturn, and that's bad, because you'd always rather sell more cars than less," he said. "But the one unproven variable on the whole domestic auto industry is their ability to make money in a depressed' market." Brady said all three major U.S. automakers have made progress in that During the third quarter of 1987, General Motors Corp. extended the period o( time over which it writes oil the cost of new plant and equipment. The ii change, retroactive to Jan. 1 , boosted the company's after-tax third quarter earnings by $573,3 million, or $1 ,82 per share of common stock. . : : GM, which is planning to expand truck production at its Janesville plant, had requested $9 million for training workers. The board reduced the amount to $5.4 million so it would be similar to the amount provided Chrysler Corp. for job training at the former AMC plant at Kenosha. Chrysler's request for $5 million amounted to $3,000 per employe, while GM's request represented about $5,000 per worker. AMTEX INC., a jointly owned American-Japanese company, plans to N build a new plant in Lebanon, Ohio, and make that city its national headquarters. Amtex will have a sales office in Southf ield. Amtex already has a manufacturing facility in Manteca, Calif. Employment could increase to about 225 in three years, said Craig JOHN VAN PELTVDetroit Free Press IN A prepared statement, GM Chairman Roger Smith and President Robert Stempel said the assumptions behind the accounting change are "now more in line with those of other major firms in our industry." Before the accounting change, analysts had predicted GM would liave third-quarter earnings of about $100 million, which would have placed it well behind arch-rivals Ford and Chrysler. During the first nine months of 1987, GM earned $2.7 billion, uprightly from earnings of $2.56 billion during the same period last year. Its earnings during the third quarter were augmented by $578.3 million in earnings from three major subsidiaries: General Motors Acceptance Corp., which earned $325 million; GM Hughes Electronics, which earned $171 million, and Electronic Data Systems, which saw its earnings jump 15.7 percent to $82.3 million. GM's worldwide factory vehicle sales in the third quarter totaled 1,641,000, down 10 percent from the 1986 period. Total U.S. sales dropped 17.8 percent to 1,030,000. Chrysler Chairman Lee Iacocca 1986. Chrysler Financial, the company's lending arm, reported its best third quarter ever, with earnings of $55.3 million. Chrysler's share of the U.S. car market fell to 9.7 percent in the third quarter from 12.2 percent in the same period last year. But its share of the U.S. truck market rose to 16.5 percent, compared to 10.7 percent during the third quarter of 1986. Chrysler's total U.S. vehicle sales dropped 7.8 percent from the year-ago period to 481,598. direction. GM's decision to opt for the accounting change allowed it to report its best third-quarter results ever. During the third quarter of 1986, it had earned $345.1 million, which includes profits from subsidiaries, such as General Motors Acceptance Corp. The company's sales during the third quarter of 1987 totaled $22.6 billion, down from sales of $22.8 billion during the same period last year.
