(1-1-0) S 19 Wabash S 26 ...at DePauw By MICK McCABE Free Press Sports Writer As Central Michigan football coach Herb Deromedi walked off the practice field Thursday afternoon, he pulled Marcelle Carruthers off to the side. "I can't wait until Saturday to see you play," Deromedi told his senior quarterback. The wait was worth it. Carruthers completed 11 of 17 passes for 188 yards Saturday night to lead Central to a 30-18 victory over the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho. Central (1-1) was ahead, 10-6, late in the first half when Carruthers threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Eric Reed for a 17-6 halftime lead. "Marcelle really played well," Deromedi said. "He was 1 1 for 1 7 and had three dropped. He had another touchdown called back because of an ineligible receiver downfield. Marcelle has worked hard and it's paying off. He's giving us good leadership." Reed, who caught seven passes for 145 yards, also received accolades from his coach. "He is running great routes; he has a great knack of getting open and he has great hands," Deromedi said. The Chippewas also got an outstanding performance from sophomore tailback John Hood, who gained 122 yards on 13 carries and scored three touchdowns, including a 53-yard scoring run. Junior tailback Rodney Stevenson added 70 yards on 15 carries. CMU tallied 288 yards rushing and 476 yards total offense. As expected, Idaho (1-1) had a strong passing game, completing 31 of 50 for 384 yards. But the Chippewas were in command the entire second half. "We played a lot of young kids again," Deromedi said of his secondary. "We were playing James Williams and Scott McGuire and at times we had Kenny Strong in there, too. So at times we had three freshmen back there at the same time. Idaho can throw the ball but there were four times they were inside our 20 but failed to put a touchdown on the board." Central next plays Sept. 26, against Minnesota in the Metrodome. IOWA 15, ARIZONA 14: Iowa evened its record al 1-1 with a victory over Arizona.
