Warren, Dear SILVER CITY (AP) Porcupine Mountain State Park officials are using a high-tech variation of flypaper to bite back at the swarms of stable flies that nibble on summer campers. As many as 40,000 stable flies, a ferocious variety resembling house-flies, met their doom last summer in traps being tested at the Upper Peninsula park. "It probably is one of the worst locations for stable flies" in Michigan's state park system, said Jack Butter-field, chief of the parks division of the yive. The study speculated that the flies travel up to 100 miles every summer from Wisconsin dairy farms and that they arrive in time to breed at Porcupine Mountain in late June through mid-August. "We Jived with that for a while," Vanderwall said, until the flies were so bad in the summer of 1982 that park officials estimate up to 150,000 tourists stayed away. THE PROBLEM prompted Jack Parker, a local mining consultant and engineer, to devise the fly traps, which were tested in the park's 20-acre main camping and picnic area. The traps are small fiberglass cylinders that reflect ultraviolet which attracts the flies. Once the flies get in the trap, they are snared by a sticky, rubbery material sprayed husband ot Mary; tamer Margaret and Charles; grand' a at the Ford Funeral Home, to St.

The center said Michael Andrew Taylor, 40, skipper of the three-man crew sent a distress message after the vessel, en route to Channel Island from Cherbourg, developed engine trouble and was swept onto coastal rocks and sank. A lifeboat and a French Maritime Affairs patrol boat went to its aid immediately but could not rescue Crocker and Ward, who reportedly were trapped aboard while sleeping. Rosary Thurs. al 7:30 PM We don't train soldiers, we train journalists, some of the best in the business. And we do it in 1 1 weeks Cat. We are the Institute for Journalism Education. Our camp is the Summer Program lor Minority Journalists.

And we oiler 1 1 of the toughest weeks anyone could ever experience. But our results confirm our method. Beginning in 1969, the Summer Program has trained more than 200 reporters. And we have found every one of them a job in one of the most important professions a tree society offers. Such results do not come easily Our reporters are trained under real newsroom conditions, by some of the leading journalists in the industry.

And they often work throughout the night if that's what it takes. The program, housed within the graduate school of journalism at the University of California, Berkeley, is an outgrowth of the belief that all points of view in our pluralistic society must be represented. Even today, only 1 in 17 professional journalists is black, Hispanic, Asian-American or belongs to another racial minority group. The Institute for Journalism Education is working to change that. As a report by the American Society of Newspaper Editors observed: "The single most consistently productive source of minorities for careers in daily newspapers is the nonprofit 1 4 four grandchildren, six areat-arandchildren and sev 9 Mi unti 8 JO a.m.
