Dave Karasinski "could stand on the mound and yell to you he was going to throw you a curve and you wouldn't be able to hit it." Bud Middaugh why Boyce was not supposed to be there. Yeager said Boyce should have known that. The violation isn't serious enough to put EMU on probation. A year ago, West Virginia coach Gale Catlett received an NCAA reprimand for attending a recruit's press conference at Highland Park High School.

"It was not the worst thing that could happen," Yeager said of Boyce's actions, "but basically there was no excuse for ii. It (a penalty) would depend on the circumstances It wouldn't be the first time somebody didn't stop to figure out a rule." Rosters announced for festival The Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan's All-Star Festival will be June 18 at Western Michigan University. At 5:30 p.m. the best players from Classes Move over, Bo Schembechler. Step aside, Bill Frieder.

You aren't the only coaches in Ann Arbor who know how to recruit. University of Michigan baseball coach Bud Mid-1 daugh, whose team is in the NCAA Mideast regionals. this weekend, recruited a tremendous freshman class a year ago, including shortstop Barry Larkin, right fielder Mike Watters and pitchers Scott Kamieniecki end Casey Close. He is at it again this year. Middaugh has signed to national letters of intent three of the state's top high school athletes Dave Karasinski of Utica, Mike Betz of Dearborn Edsel Ford and Dave Cooper of Sterling Heights Stevenson.

KARASINSKI, a left-hander with a 9-0 record and two saves, is the state's top pitcher. In 61 innings, he has struck out 132 batters and allowed only two earned runs. "He's got good poise and a major league curve- ball," Middaugh said. "He could stand on the mound and yell to you he was going to throw you a curve and1 "you wouldn't be able to hit it. The high school batters are chasing it all over the place because you don't see that many kids with that kind of breaking pitch.

His velocity is adequate, but I think he'll get quicker." Betz was an outstanding quarterback for Edsel rFord, but wants to play baseball in college. He is hitting .446 and is a good defensive catcher. "Mike's got the strongest arm of any of the kids," Middaugh said. "A catcher is what he's got to be." Cooper was highly recruited as a tight end, but he also chose baseball. He is hitting .307 and he began the i week with a 0.91 ERA.

"He looks very mature behind the plate, but he could play the outfield or on the corners," Middaugh said: "He's going to be a good hitter because he's got good wrists. Take anybody who throws well with good wrist action and he could be a good hitter. He just gets up and pops it." KMU's Boyce violates NCAA rule Eastern Michigan coach Jim Boyce got more than he bargained for Sunday when he went to watch the AAU basketball games at Schoolcraft College. Not only did Boyce see EMU recruit Lewis Scott score 30 points, but he committed an NCAA violation by attending the game. "This is a dead period," explained Tom Yeager, a member of the NCAA's enforcement division.

The dead period began May 15 and ends July 1. "There can be no recruiting or evaluating done. He (Boyce) can't be there." "I wasn't evaluating talent," Boyce said. "I went to see my kids play. I don't have any scholarships left.

I didn't know I was not allowed to be there. I wasn't the only coach there, but I don't want to mention who the others were." The dead period was designed to keep coaches away from high school juniors. Many juniors could have been at the Schoolcraft games, and that, too, is Saves Gas rand A Fast Italian June 2nd I Special, low oil change price $6.50 Less Mobil rebate. 1J50 after Cash-in on this Super rebate now with Mobil Super The all-seasons motor oil. It is the optimum way to get around a corner because it wastes as little track surface as possible. The fastest cars will be those able to stay on the correct line through turns. Traffic, however, often causes a driver to take a different line; a wet track surface can change it, too, and also alter braking and acceleration points.
