Even though the Bobcats have only one victory this year, Swanson said he has been much more enjoyable compared to last season. "We are much more competitive," he said. "Last year, we were losing by 30 or more points a game, and this year it has only been 6 or 7." McMahan leads Oregon-Davis with 17.5 Words: The Bobcats may not be having the greatest success, but the Warriors can't afford to take them lightly. The big key point will be how we approach that game mentally, said "Oregon-Davis has not won many games, but seeing them the two nights in the holiday tourney and their first two games or the year their improvement is amazing. They've got the 6-8 kia and VanBlaricom and Yung are hard to guard, too.

Malchow leads the Warriors with 22.3 points a game, Kroft is at 21.0, Russell is at 10.0 and Dilts at 9.7. Miller also sees better defensive plav "We're getting better defensively and as far as going loose balls," he said. "I think we've also made some progress fensively as far as players knowing what their roles are. Bomber Boomings: Pressure defense is getting it done this year for Rensselaer. "We press from one end the court 10 the other," Doud said.

"Our defense scores for us. I would say we get 20 points a game directly from our cefense. is a key for us this year. And we have been able to score some points by moving the ball down the court quickly." Doud admits not knowing a lot about the Panthers, but said the Bombers will jus stick to what got them five wins. "Pioneer can play, that much I know, he said.

"We will just stick with the game plan we used for our first six games. You do want to guard individual talent, but for the most part, you try not to change much." "They are one ot the best basketball teams in the area," he said. 'They have a lot of firepower.

They do some good things on the court and can play some good defense. A key for us will be working against pressure defense. That may give us some difficulty. We just need to play smarter and make each possession count, i he possessions in the second and third quarters are just important as the ones late in the fourth." Cougar Calling: Geheb sees better things ahead for the young Comets. "They are a young, inexperienced team, Geheb said "They lost some of their scoring from last year.

Now they have new players and a new coach. They are going to get better as the season goes on." Reports Have Wyche Headed To Tampa CINCINNATI (AP) Former Cincinnati Bengals coach Sam Wyche is expected to be named coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers today, according to news reports, although Wyche himself denied those reports. Bucs owner Hugh Culverhouse, who is to be in Cincinnati today for board meetings unrelated to football, offered the Buccaneers' head coaching job Thursday night and Wyche "accepted, according to WCPO-TV in Cincinnati. WKRC-TV also reported that Wyche was offered the job, and WLWT-TV said it had a reporter at Wyche's house when the call came from the Buccaneers, The Tampa Tribune is reporting in today's editions that Wyche said early Thursday night that he had not been offered the job and any reports that he had were "absolutely false." The Cincinnati television stations, however, said the Bucs contacted Wyche later in the evening to offer him the job. The Tribune also quoted an unnamed Bucs official reached late Thursday night as saying.

"If I were a betting man, 1 would bet he's got the job." Bucs director of public relations Rick Odioso said a news conference had not been scheduled for today, but that one could be thrown together this morning. Bucs vice president Stephen Story had said that a decision might be reached as soon as today, but Story had no comment when asked about further interviews with candidates. "To the best of my knowledge, it's Mr. Culverhouse's decision and I don't know of any decision that has been reached," Story said. Wyche.

who was head coach of the Bengals for eight years, left the team on Christinas Eve after meet- ins with general manager Mike Brown. Wyche said he was fired on the heels of a 3-13 season, but Brown said Wyche quit. Culverhouse also talked with Buddy Ryan, Floyd Peters and Mike Holmgren, as well as Bill Parcells, who turned down the job. Earlier Thursday, the Bucs quashed rumors that Lindy Infante was a candidate for the team's coaching vacancy, saying they have not and "do not anticipate interview- ins the former Green Bay coach. Pack Makes Offer To Holmgren But 49ers want compensation for losing top assistant coach GREEN BAY, Wis.

(AP) The Green Bay Packers have offered San Francisco offensive coordinator Mike Holmgren a contract to become head coach, but the 49ers say they will ask for compensation to let him go. "We have a firm contract offer from the Green Bay Packers," Bob LaMonte, Holmgren's agent, said Thursday night. But he added: "It's far from a done deal." The 49ers are still upset with the Packers over their failure to disclose a drug investigation involving Tim Harris before San Francisco traded for the former Green Bay linebacker. The investigation was dropped and no charges were filed against Harris, obtained from Green Bay last September in exchange for the 49ers' second-round draft picks in 1992 and 1993. The '93 pick could drop to a third-rounder if Harris, who has pleaded innocent to misdemeanor drunken driving charges, is suspended by the NFL.

49ers president Carmen Policy told The Press Democrat of Santa Rosa, that the team is ready to use its contractual leverage to keep Holmgren, who has been with the team for six years. "We are going to ask for some form of compensation," Policy told the newspaper. "I'd rather have a dissatisfied Mike Holmgren staying with us than a happy Mike Holmgren going to Green Bay." Evansville Rebuffs Offer Of Minor League Team ii-irt liic-mrv hari with MiUtinsIy, Fort Wayne appears to be ready to build stadium for Twins Class A team EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) The mayor and other local officials rebuffed a New York businessman's inquiry aboul putting a minor league baseball team in the cily. The Evansville Courier reported Thursday.

Eric Maraenau. a businessman and sports psychologist, flew to Evansville on Oct. 10 with two associates to expecting to meet with Mayor Frank McDonald and other local leaders, but McDonald declined to see them, the paper said. Maraenau took his offer to Fort Wayne, which has been seeking a minor league team and is prepared to build a "new stadium to accommodate it. At a Thursday meeting of the Allen County Council, the president of the Memorial Coliseum board said a combination of public and private funds would be sought to provide a $4.5 million construction budget for the stadium.

The coliseum board has already spent $50.000 to prepare for construction of a stadium, and had planned Thursday to ask the council for permission to use $500.000 in revenues from the county's food and beverage tax. But Lehman said the board decided to forego the request for the money because the deal with Margenau to bring a team to Fort Wayne isn't final. Jackson Lehman said the coliseum board has reached a tentative agreement with Margenau. who is on the verge of buying the Kenosha Twins. Maraenau has indicated he will move the team to ForfWayne if the Wisconsin city does not replace the 71-year-old stadium where the club plays.

The Courier said Margenau came to Indiana's ihird-laraesl city at the urging of New York Yankees first baseman Don Mattingly to discuss mak- ina Bosse Field the new home for the Kenosha Twins, Minnesota's Class A farm club. "It seems to me kind of a shame, a city the size of Evansville, the history it's had. with Mattingly. and the university, that nobody seems to care that there's not a professional baseball team in town when the opportunity is there to have one," Maraenau said. Professional baseball in Evansville dates to 1884 Bosse Field has been home to 13 franchise since it opened in 1915, beginning with the Evas of the old Class Central League and ending when the financially troubled Class AAA Triplets departed in 1984 for Nashville, Tenn.

McDonald was out of his office Thursday afternoon and unavailable for comment. He told The Courier he was unable to meet with Mareenau and his associates because of a scheduling conflict. McDonald, a Democrat, was campaigning for re-election to a second term. The "newspaper cited McDonald as saying he was not pushing for another minor league baseball team because of historically poor long-term support for it in Evansville.
