pace mil ml 100 05 the Pilots' 62-60 upset victory Barden's desire led King to top by Scott Walton Free Press Sports Writer It was a bittersweet season for the top girls basketball players in Detroit's Public School League. Every player in the league triumphed personally in some way, because the season was jeopardized from the start by the school board's proposed budget cuts. The state's best players wound up eliminating each other from the state tournament in the early rounds. "Right now, I'd rather be just coming home from Grand Rapids with the state championship trophy," said Detroit King's 6-foot senior center, Angela Barden, captain of the 1989 Free Press All-PSL team. "At least I accomplished a lot of the goals I'd set for myself.

But as a team, we didn't accomplish as much as we wanted to." Barden, who transferred from Detroit DePorres last year for personal reasons, averaged a team-leading 20.5 points and eight rebounds. King (19-1) was rated No. 1 in Class A all season, but lost to Detroit Murray-Wright, 62-60, in the district tournament. Barden, King's best free-throw shooter, at 73 percent, wanted to be better. "I believe all the girls who made first team All-PSL aren't satisfied," Barden said.

"They all want to be better than they are. That's what makes them great players striving to be the best" King's backcourt ace, junior Markka Aldridge, made the first team for a second straight year even though Barden's presence called for her to do less scoring and more passing. Aldridge averaged 12.5 points, eight assists and five rebounds. "Next year, she's going to have to play like her sophomore year (where she averaged over 25 points)," King coach William Winfield said. Murray-Wright's junior guard, Markita Robinson, named to the All-PSL team for the first time, will go head-to-head with Aldridge again next season.

Robinson averaged a team-best 23.7 points. She and Aldridge could be Miss Basketball candidates next year. "It's not going to come easy, but I'm not giving up," Robinson said. "I'm going at it more than 100 percent. I'm working hard for it as of today." Mumford's Tamika Broomfield said the high point of her season was proving herself against Barden in a game.

Barden had 18 points in King's 62-35 victory; Broomfield scored 17. "She scored the most when I got in foul trouble," Broomfield said. "I know I can stop her, and she probably thought she could stop me. I really enjoyed that game." Making the All-PSL first team is the ideal ending to Western junior guard Dawanda McCary's season. "I got more time to play, I started, I was team captain and the team as a whole played great," McCary said.
