"When everything works right you are pretty tough." Waltrip has never won the Daytona 500, but other drivers said the slower speeds suit him better.

"I'm really happy with the rules," Allison said. "I think it would make racing better everywhere." However, the rules did nothing to prevent the accidents. Yarborough was unhurt, but his spinout was costly because he was gunning for the lead and knocked out a number of other cars. "I was passing Darrell going into the corner and the car never stopped," Yarborough said. "The back end just came off going into Turn 1, and I spun.

I thought we were running enough spoiler. Waltrip must have sucked all the air from the back of my car. We never touched." Waltrip said: "I don't know what happened. I was moving over because he seemed to want to pass. I just felt him going sideways." Ed Pimm said: "Cale spun and a couple of guys panicked and hit their brakes.

Somebody got sideways and cars were everywhere." Then it became a three-car race between Allison, Earnhardt and Waltrip. In the final turn of the final lap, Waltrip stayed low and blocked Allison's path, but in the homestretch Earnhardt passed Allison and nearly caught Waltrip. "That was the only place that I had the opportunity to pass him (Waltrip)," Allison said. "I thought I could get enough speed down the backstretch to draft by and I thought Earnhardt would go with me. Darrell was just a little faster in the corners." INJURY REPORT: Bobby Walwak, who crashed in the first race, suffered a slightly fractured vertebrae and was reported in good condition.
