DETROIT FRFE PRESSTHURSDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1987 7D Vikings' Carter wants to catch more passes I- 1 than any receiver we've had. I don't want to go back to the Green Bay days with (Boyd) Dowler and (Max) McGee and Carroll Dale and all those guys, but he's in select company with all the fine receivers I've been associated with. "I don't know anything about (Mark) Duper and Jerry Rice and whoever it might be, all I say is Anthony Carter is a hell of a football player." Notes: Guard Keith Dorney, whose injured left knee locked several times before forcing him out of the Lions' game at Tampa Bay, will not play Sunday. Dorney apparently will require knee surgery as soon as a turf burn on his knee has healed. Carter this time.

And, although Wat-kins hasn't played against Carter since 1985, he knows what to expect. "I see him on the highlights all the time," Watkins said. "He's definitely the man. He can turn a 10-yard out (pattern) into an 80-yard touchdown." Some observers are amazed at Carter's big-play ability, considering he doesn't have outstanding speed. "They say Jerry Rice (of San Francisco) is not fast and they say Mike Quick (of Philadelphia) is not fast, but if the ball's 15 yards in front they can still get it," Carter said.

"They can run under it." Burns, in his second season as the Vikings' coach, said: "Anthony does more with the ball after he catches it be on their way. He caught five passes for 1 1 1 yards and a touchdown in Minnesota's 24-10 victory Nov. 9, 1986, and he caught two for 94 yards including a 73-yard touchdown bomb in a 34-19 victory Sept. 13. Lions cornerback Duane Galloway was the victim of the 73-yard bomb that changed the momentum of the season opener.

The Lions blitzed, leaving Galloway with one-on-one responsibility. "He's one of the top receivers in the league," Galloway said. "He does it all. He catches the ball, he runs good routes and he gets in the end zone." Bobby Watkins is expected to have much of the coverage responsibility on ANTHONY CARTER, from Page 1D around. We just take what the defense gives us and if they double-cover him, we don't throw him the ball." CARTER who helped the Michigan Panthers to the 1983 USFL championship is particularly unhappy that he was thrown only one pass in the second half of Sunday's 16-10 loss to Green Bay.

That loss and the preceding week's 30-24 last-minute loss to Chicago have dropped the Vikings to 7-6 (including three losses by the strike team), putting their playoff chances in danger. But if Carter is as hard on the Lions as he has been in his two most recent games against them, the Vikings might Free Press File Pholo Millie Schembechler says her husband's mind is on football. Offensive co-ordinator Gary Moeller will run the team in his absence. Schembechler could be released rom the hospital before Christmas and resume coaching in two or three months. He also might be allowed to attend the game in Tampa. "I hope he can (continue coaching)," Millie Schembechler said.

"I would hate for him to go out after a season that was less than his best. (U-M is 7-4). Bo has a very good way of coping with stress and he has the ability to go to sleep after 30 seconds. "I think he has a built-in stress release system. I just try to make things at home peaceful and relaxing.

You know him. Bo does what he wants to do." Which includes hiding occasional chest pain from family members. Moeller said he knew Schembechler had chest discomfort for a year. Millie said she didn't. SCHEMBECHLER complained of chest pains Tuesday morning after an overnight stay at the hospital following a catheterization Monday.

Doctors found three veins completely closed and the fourth 90 percent clogged, the same veins used to replace arteries in Schembechler's first bypass surgery 1 1 years ago. Surgeon Otto Gago opted to replace Schembechler's veins with mammary arteries from his chest and a saphenous vein from his right leg. Gago, who performed both bypass operations, said veins are 60 percent open in half the cases after 10 years, but mammary arteries are 92 percent open in most cases after the same period of time. The drawback of using a mammary artery is slow healing of the sternum and more discomfort for patients. "I was frightened," said Millie Schembechler, who was at her husband's bedside when the pain began.

"I wasn't sure if he was having a heart attack or what. He had the classic symptoms. You know him, he is real tough and macho and tries not to admit he is in pain' Said Moeller: "He indicated that something like this might happen." Millie suspected something was wrong during Thanksgiving holidays at Drummond Island. It is a time when Schembechler usually is in good spirits. "The kids felt that he was angry at them and he was not as jovial as he usually is," she said.

"I sensed that he was not as healthy as he usually is." Millie said it took a team effort from hospital staff, friends and family to "almost kidnap him and get him in the hospital." Doctors described Schembechler as a good patient and think the worst is over. "It is just a matter of healing," said cardiologist John Fischer. "We hope to take him off the respirator within 24 hours and have him on his feet in a few days." Millie Schembechler appeared to be holding up well and thanked well-wishers from around the country. But she admitted to having a long, hard cry following surgery. "I am the world's best crier," she said with a smile.

"I had to get that off my chest and I apologize for not meeting you yesterday. I did not want to expose myself at that time. (But) I'm a tough old gal from the country and I can handle these things." Moeller ready to handle reins GARY MOELLER, from Page 1D will coach the Wolverines against Alabama in the Hall of Fame Bowl Jan. 2 in Tampa, Fla. Doctors won't say whether Schembechler will make the trip, but do say he won't coach.

"It excites me, but it is still Bo's show," Moeller said. "We've done it a couple of times when he had the kidney stones this year. We just carry on. Everybody knows what to do. They (players) love Bo, but they know they have to carry on." Only once in Schembechler's 19-year reign has a Michigan team taken the field without him.

That happened in the 1970 Rose Bowl against Southern California, when Schembechler suffered a heart attack New Year's Eve. Michigan came out flat and lost, 10- 3. But Schembechler has stressed that when one person goes down, another must perform just as well. Now it's Moeller's turn. "We will rally around him," said defensive tackle Mark Messner.

"But we will be motivated to win this one for Bo." Said tailback Jamie Morris: "This year, coach Moeller has established himself with the offense and he is well-known throughout the team. He knows the system well and knows what Bo wants. I have confidence in coach Moeller." llllil liliilllil siiililrliiil lilltii il. jJjm .1 X' -mwm'- in amm" i ii Lt-rSZT-Z L. llllilliif lis.
