Andretti calls new course goofy They play baseball the way Imagine a baseball team with the slogan, "no swearing, no stealing, no sweating." If it sounds old-fashioned, that's because the team the Ohio Village Muffins claims to be the only team in the country that plays baseball according to the original 19th century rules. The Muffins are a group of 30 volunteers from the Ohio Historical Society who are divided into two squads that play on weekends, either at the historical museum in Columbus, Ohio or on the road. They will be in town for a 1 p.m. game Sunday against a team of local volunteers the Greenmead Gophers at the Livonia Historical Society's annual Heritage Fair at the city's historical site at 8 Mile i i Andretti won the pole for the final three Grand Prix races downtown. And today he could do that again, if the car runs right and the track isn't slick and no slower cars get in his way.

If everything goes well and no one else causes him a problem. I don't like criticizing the Andrettis; they have had a terrible couple of weeks. Mario is here, hobbling on crunched toes held together with steel rods; his younger son, Jeff, is still hospitalized in Indianapolis with severe foot and leg injuries suffered in the Indianapolis 500 that appeared to be Michael's for the taking, before his car quit on him 1 1 laps from the checkered flag. You would think after a race like that, little things like this new racetrack wouldn't set Michael Andretti off so. But it does, and probably we shouldn't let it bother us.

Besides, if people have as much fun on Belle Isle as they have hanging around Mickey Mouse, a wonderful time will be had by all. Ease up, Michael. And have a nice weekend. Northern Ireland cyclist extends Milk Race lead Free Press Wire Reports LINCOLN, England Conor Henry of Northern Ireland extended his overall lead to 19 seconds in cycling's Milk Race on Friday by finishing fifth in the day's 69-mile leg. He's snake-bit, and then some Crew members work on Michael truck's fault.

Or maybe it was Vitolo's fault. Or the track's. Or maybe the media. Whatever, it certainly wasn't the Andrettis' fault. They are wonderful drivers and tough competitors.

Maybe that's the deal. Maybe they care so much about succeeding they can't accept the fact that failure is their own problem. A lot of other drivers agreed Friday with Andretti's assessment that there will be few spots to pass on this track. But most of them accepted that as a challenge of the sport. Bobby Rahal said it was "very hard Si 1 JULIAN H.

GONZALEZDetroit Free Press Andretti's car Friday. to pass" but called it a "fun track very enjoyable drive." Raul Boesel Friday's second-fastest qualifier said: "Starting position is going to be important because it is not difficult to block the guys in back. There is a place to pass out there, but it will not be easy." It will be part of the game. During his practice runs, Michael Andretti had run at 97.581 m.p.h. But his crew changed engines before qualifying and the car never ran right, so he skipped the afternoon qualifying session, dominated by three substitute drivers: Teo Fabi, Boesel and Paul Tracy.

PACKARD BEll I VA CHARLIE VINCENT, from Page IB "one of the nicest street circuits maybe the nicest I've ever experienced." Detroit, starved for someone to care for it, was flattered. Detroit heard good things about itself and blushed. And felt good about itself, even if it was over something as nonessential as a temporary race course. Gee, we thought, isn't that nice to hear. Then, with just a couple of words, Michael Andretti said the best we had to offer the Indy-car circuit was "Mickey Mouse." Said it was goofy.

Said this course "doesn't make sense." All of that would mean nothing if it was said by some driver none of us had ever heard of. But when Michael Andretti speaks, people listen, because he might be the best driver in the world. He won on the old downtown course two years ago and has been courted by at least one Formula One team, and nobody doubts he knows what he is talking about when it comes to auto racing. But Michael and his father, Mario, have each earned a reputation as a complainer. As people who can always find a cause for failure.

A scapegoat. A year ago when the rest of the Detroit Grand Prix field maneuvered its way around the wrecked car of Dennis Vitolo and the tow truck hooked to it Mario hit the tow truck and Michael hit Vitolo. And both An-drettis complained later it was the tow Comes Complete With Epson Printer! VGA Monitor Windows 3 1 LANtastic Diskettes Paper Ready to plug in and run! "The team was started in 1981 to try to recreate the type of leisure activity that was prevalent in the 19th century here in Columbus," said Sharon Antle of the Ohio Historical Society. "We want to show people how early baseball was played." The game the Muffins play takes on a drastically different look than any game modern society is used to. The Muffins use leather balls and handmade bats, and a foul fly caught on one bounce is an out. To the Muffins, the game is still a gentleman's sport. The hurler throws underhand, and the batter indicates where he wants the ball thrown.

General manager Lou Lamoriello would not say McVie, who was coaching the Devils for the second time, had been fired. At a news conference introducing Brooks as the team's fifth coach in five years, Lamoriello said the Devils decided to promote Brooks from the team's American Hockey League franchise in Utica, N.Y., because he is better suited to the changing game of hockey.

The Devils set franchise records for points (87) and tied the franchise mark for victories (38) last season.
