in By Akilah Seecharan The Detroit News Farmington Hills The Edmund Fitzgerald was the pride of the Great Lakes, but no one was prouder of the massive ore steamer than Charles Haskill. Mr. Haskill was president of Great Lakes Engineering Works, which built the ill-fated ship and two others that traversed the Great Lakes. He was a naval architect and marine engineer, a member of the U.S. Naval Institute and Forest Lake Country Club in Bloomfield Hills.

Carol Haskill described her father as a "self-made man who knew the meaning of hard work." When his father died, Mr. Haskill supported his family from age 14. He also put himself through school. Carol Haskill said her father thought of the ships as his children and became very emotional at their launchings. "He stood there and had his heart in his mouth," Carol Haskill said.

"He would say a little prayer hoping that the ship would go out safely." Mr. Haskill, 94, died Thursday, July 16, 1998, of a heart attack at his Farmington Hills home. He was president of the River Rouge shipbuilder during construction of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank with its crew of 29 on Nov. 11, 1975, in Lake Superior.
