resumed Monday night after two armed men with long guns were spotted in a Washtenaw County field. The fugitives, who escaped from Camp Cassidy on Sunday morning, were believed to be armed. Police did not know whether the men spotted were the fugitives. Sheriffs deputies and state troopers used police dogs and a helicopter to search in Sharon and Sylvan townships, said State Police Sgt. A third inmate was captured Sunday evening, nearly eight hours after escaping from the minimum-security camp. WHITE, 69, a retired Berrien County judge, died Friday after a brief illness in his Niles home. Mr. White was appointed to the Berrien County Circuit Court in 1971 by Gov. William Milliken. He retired in 1986.

He also served as a visiting judge to the Michigan Court of Appeals. Mr. White graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1946 and was a partner at the White, Klute and White law firm in Niles from 1948 until his judicial appointment. In 1954-56, Mr. White was a Berrien County assistant prosecutor.

Mr. White was a member of several professional organizations, including the State Bar of Michigan and the American and Berrien County bar associations. He was past treasurer of the Berrien County Republican Committee and a past director of the First National bank of Southwestern Michigan, now known as Old Kent Bank-Southwest. At one time, Mr. White was a member of the Niles Board of Public Safety and a senior warden of the Trinity Episcopal Church.

He is survived by his wife, Ann; sons, Stuart, Stanley and Michael; three grandchildren; a sister and two brothers. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Episcopal Church, 9 S. He made you better, and stronger and more focused." Mr. Reese, 71, a historian of African and African-American culture and a former social studies teacher, died of cancer Friday in his Detroit home.

"Even when he was most weary, when he was in the most pain, he continued to teach and to challenge everyone around him with good humor," Watson said. Born in Gary, Mr. Reese was an Army master sergeant during World War II before moving to Detroit in 1946. He worked at the Post Office for 14 years while studying for a sociology degree and teaching certificate at Wayne State University. He taught social studies for 25 years at Hutchins, Post and Durfee middle schools in Detroit before retiring in 1986.

In the 1960s, Mr. Reese and his wife, Sarah Carolyn Adams Reese, a River Rouge High School teacher, spent summers teaching Southern blacks about democracy in freedom schools sponsored by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). In 1964, the Reeses volunteered with the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, becoming codirec-tors of the Hattiesburg, freedom school program. "The main idea is to strengthen people's belief in democracy," he said in a 1965 Free Press interview. give them hope -where there is 'no hope." In 1965, Mr.

Reese was freedom schools coordinator for the AFT and the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. In 1966, Mr. Reese took a leave of absence from teaching in Detroit to become the executive director of the AFT program. More recently, Mr. Reese served as a cultural consultant for the Martin Luther King Library in Atlanta.

He helped structure black studies programs at universities across the county. In addition to his wife, Mr. Reese is survived by a brother, a sister and many nieces and nephews. A family hour will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, followed by a noon service at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, 18700 James Couzens, Detroit.
