the contracting and business in the city of ontreal In the spring of Uiko Col McKillicau came th California and he vroseciitcd his business in sah sive establishment of the Messrs Veitch in or der to get a look at the counters and desks which have not yet been placed in position In cidentally the reporter visited the various ue partments and was astonished to observe how thoroughly equipped and really extensive it is It is located at 1104 and 110G Webster street yne unices nesigoing room min ana stair lent are ail locHterl nn hp ground or first Hour The mill is 'equipped with the latest improved machinery Here lumber in the rough is prepared for the ue use of the car penters and joiners I the rear of the mill is the stair building and window frame a large room which is usually one of the busiest in this very busy es tablishment The engine room is also located on the ground floor All the power used in driving the planers slickers turning lathes circular saws and mor tise machines is furnished by a 25 horse power gas engine On the second floor are located the carving hard wood and veneering departments and the dry room Tbs carving department is perhaps to the ar tistic eye the most inter ine Ornamen eating of any Mont cf tai Carving the ornamental carving is I done by band and there I fore only the most skillful mechanics are em ployed for this wcrk The hard wood as the name indi cates is where all the fine panel work is done This work is a feature with the firm and in this particular line they excel over all compel ition As evidence of this it may be said that they did the inside work for the Owl Drug Company i rancisco for the $40000 residence of Bailey on Jackson street for the new Whittril residence in Alameda and many others in and out ol Oakland In this department the reporter observed a number of artisans st work on the huge counters pigeon holes shelving and desks which will be used by the official and clerical force of the Gas Company The work is being done with the finest attention to artistic detail and the ma hogany used throughout is of tne very finest kind Adjoining the hard wood department is the veneering department where all veneering is done The dry foom is stored with lumber placed in upright positions and dried hy dry air which is driven into the room by hot air blasts lum ber is used for any purpose until it is thoroughly seasoned Mr Veitch has been engaged in the building aid contracting business A Long 1 imi in for over eighteen years Ilufeiness and the firm has always Enjoyed an enviable repu tation for turning out first class work and fin furnishing the most reasonable estimates on con tracts of every description The industry over which Veitch and Brother preside as proprietors is a credit to Oak land and furnishes employment to from eighty to one hundred men ear in and year out AH the employees are residents of Oakland These are facts which are infrequently considered by persons about tv let out work but they are facts which the thoughtful and patriotic Oitklander should seriously consider before going away from his own city to procure labor Since they have been in business the eitch Bros have built over three hundred houses and have performed other work aggregately repre sented by perhaps $1 80000X1 urnish them with a lot and a com misoion and they will do the rest One of the most pronounced and artistic feat ures of the building is the The Decorated richly coiffured ceiling Ceiling" There is nothing like it in Oakland and it is one of the finest pieces of ornamental work of its kind ever done on the coast is what is known 1 ded hrancisco building the well known snot tower on the corner of irst and Howard streets the Jewish Synagogue and other structures jnally well known Subsequently he moved to Amador county where he constructed flumes ditches auaru mills etc for John 11 Brien of this city In Nevada county he built for the Bloomfield Gravel Mining Company a huge dam that forms their great reservoir together with the flumes and a system of ditches forty seven miles long He afterward built all the hoisting works on the line of the mining tunnel This was between 1861) and 1871 Returning to Oakland upon the completion of this work he identified himself with the firm of Burnham Standeford A Co At the last local election be was nominated for the Shrievalty by the Hemorratic party and was elected bv a handsome mnjrrifv The handsomest building in Oakland is about completed It is not the largest or the costliest is simply the handsomc Oakland llnud purely designed ami wo in cat Ruildin thoughtfully 'Constructed It is the new Structure uf the Oakland Gas and Heat Company located on the northwest corner of Clay and Thirteenth streets Everyone who has contributed labor or thought to that building is deserving ut com mendation even as the building itself justifies praise and an intelligent description Away back iti the sixteenth century a genial old Doge of lorence desired to perpetuate his memory and prestige by erecting unimpressive palace that would fitly represent his fortunes and his taste He commissioned Picardi a famous architect of that day to do the work But un fortunately forthetrifling ambition vf the con ceited old Doge his house became known as and not as his own This is an isolated instance where the author made a larger profit than the publisher Now the new building ol the Oakland Gas Light and Heat Company was designed by ox head A Coxiiead of Suu rancisco and it was designed from the famous artistic palace uf Picardi It is the purest style of Italian Ren naissance toward which modern architectural effort is moving just now It is a two story structure with a frontai of 100 feeton Thirteenth street and RU feet on Clay The materials used are Roman face brick and terra cotta trimmings There me two en trances one on Thirteenth and the other on Clay street The Thirteenth street entrance leads into the office of the company and consists of a granite arch flanked by small windows protected by wrought iron bars Two magnificent lorentine lamps of the sixteenth century hang above the entrance The Clay street entrance
