head gear for the sake of having his feet well shod and he will go about in public places wearing a battered and soiled slouch hat but scrupulously neat as to his foot wear The peculiarity perhaps arises from family pride a besetting South ern sin coupled with the belief that aristoc racy is evinced by the shape and size of the feet It is worthy of not however that the Southern slouch hat is often a costly article of the finest and most durable felt Such a hat for winter and a costly and in destructible Panama straw for summer are the proper head gear for a Southern coun try gentleman The financial abilities fitted him and for which there has been a long stand ing demand in the community It was the establishing of a bank the first one founded in the town and known as the Bank of San Leandro The bank is located at the corner of Hay wards and Ward avenues in a building which has been thoroughly remodeled and arranged for this purpose and supplied with everything required in a modern model banking institution A strongly con tructed vault with a fiiie time lock combination safe is one of its most salient features and now the business men of the town re 1 easier since tliev seen occasionally in New York even upon the feet of men who have long lived in the city and have in most other respects conformed to urban methods of life But the long boot has really given wav to the high shoe even in rural regions though a considerable per centage of country folk even in villages and large towns resist the innovation here are otherwise sensible men who still cling to the an instrument of torture voluntarily assumed with many struggles on Sundays and visiting nights after a man has worn all the week a loose and comfortable coarse boot in which he at ease The Hotel Elmhurst While Elmhurst a visit to its principal hostelry would indeed be not out of place In fact our trip so far has given us an appetite for lunch and the "elegant bm ding seen in the picture has
