A manager whose livelihood is threatened sometimes feels she's just unlucky or too old. A jobless executive often concludes he is over -qualified for the jobs that exist, making it nearly impossible to get back on a payroll. Interesting speculations but, in most cases, incorrect ones, says a prominent career counselor in the Chicago area who has been helping climb out of career jams for 20 years.

Thomas M. Camden people in his lectures, writings and audio cassettes suggests these winning strategies to help you get your job search under control: If your main efforts have been limited to answering ads and using employment agencies to generate interviews, you have assumed an inactive role in your own job search. Assume an active role. Start networking, a process by which you inform everyone you know about your accomplishments and what you want to do. Everyone you know in turn knows at least three other people who can help.

Use their contacts, advice and ideas. Do not depend on mass mailing of resumes. Most of them wind up in someone's wastebasket. A personal interview should precede the resume. Don't let yourself be screened out by a non-hiring authority who merely reviews resumes.

Research the companies and specific managers who can use your talents and experience. Many of the best jobs are never advertised and are often created for those who show initiative and enterprise. Generate your own interviews, by determining who in the company has the hiring authority for the type of job you are seeking, then contact that individual. Remember that who you know (or can meet) often is more important than what you can do. Know what is required in a competitive employment interview.

You are selling your most important product, yourself, and you are the world's leading authority on that product. As Camden says, "Many managers can't get the interview necessary to win the job offer, or don't know how to handle an interview once they get it." A price list of his materials is available from Camden and Associates, 501 W. Ogden Hinsdale, Ill. 60521. READER SERVICE: "Ingredients for a Successful Interview," eight pages, is a booklet prepared by Management Recruiters, a contingency search and recruitment organization with 400 offices nationwide.

The handy interview overview capsulizes advice on preparing for and devising strategic actions during the meeting, as well as answering and asking questions. To receive a single copy, enclose a stamped, self-addressed, long white envelope with your request to Joyce Lain Kennedy at this newspaper. Ask for "Interview." The offer ends Dec. 31, 1981.
