ED DETROIT FREE PRESS. mJESDAY. SEPTEMBER 26. 1989 What do you say, Jose? U-M can't afford to go into a shell Canseco pnony ueiaus "After he hit the first one, I felt he would be OK," Schembechler said. Vada Murray blocked an extra-point kick and recovered an onside kick for U-M.

Tripp Welborne returned a punt 63 yards. Freshman Chris Sta-pleton replaced Eduardo Azcona and averaged 45.5 yards on two punts. feel better about the kicking game personnel-wise," Schembechler said. "But we still have work to do. I'll continue with Stapleton, but I'm not sure about kickoffs yet." John Albertson handled distance kickoffs against UCLA, with Carlson doing onside and squib kicks.

Albertson had kicks of 42, 58, 54 and 54 yards. None went inside the 5. Schembechler Smorgasbord: On a one-yard touchdown by UCLA's Kevin Williams, who lost the ball in the end zone but got an official's ruling that he was past the goal line: "That was Charles White Jr." On U-M being penalized 15 yards for a lengthy celebration after the winning field goal: "I tried to explain that if there had been illegal procedure on the play and we had to kick over, it would have been way back. Whether I got anything across, I don't know. But I wanted to run out there myself." On freshman fullback Burnie Le- names of most opposing players.

They are, plain and simple, numbers playing positions on game film. No. 14, the Maryland quarterback, is listed as questionable. Neil O'Don-nell severely bruised his right (throwing) hand against Clemson; he left the game when he no longer could grip the ball. X-rays scheduled for Monday wereacanceled and O'DonnelTs status will be determined daily.

Schembechler is counting on him playing. O'Donnell (6-feet-3, 219 pounds) has completed 59 of 96 passes for 711 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. His career 61 percent completion rate is a school record. Maryland has 1,256 yards total offense, 50 more than its opponents'. Nine turnovers have cost the Terrapins, whose win was 23-0 over Western Michigan.

The Terps' opponents have a combined 15-1 record. Saturday's game will be Michigan's first non-televised appearance since Oct. 29, 1988 against Northwestern. Guard Dean Dingman (step throat) could play against Maryland. Three offensive starters remain out: quarterback Michael Taylor (back), fullback Jarrod Bunch (left knee) and guard Marc Ramirez (illness).

"Bunch had arthroscopic surgery," Schembechler said. "We're hoping to get Taylor and Bunch back by Michigan State (Oct 14) at the earliest." Elvis Grbac has completed 30 of 44 By Steve Kornacki Free Preei Sportt Writer No trumpets are blaring with this announcement: Maryland visits the University of Michigan on Saturday. A kazoo maybe, but no trumpets. This is not Notre Dame or UCLA. The Terrapins (1-3) haven't had a winning record since 1985, when they were Atlantic Coast Conference champions.

Bo Schembechler has coached long enough to realize his players will experience some letdown. The key is keeping overconfidence to a minimum, and his plan to accomplish that is simple. "I am going to have them study film," Schembechler said. "And once they look at them on film, they won't take them lightly." He facetiously added, "West Virginia kicked the hell out of Maryland, 14-10. North Carolina State beat them, 10-6." The Mountaineers and Wolfpack are Top 20 teams, as is Clemson, which did dominate the Terrapins, 31-7, Saturday.

Which brings us to another reason why it's hard to take Maryland seriously. Terrapins? What terror does the diamondback turtle strike into opponents? Shortening it to Terps helps nothing. But coaches aren't concerned with such things. They don't even know the because he wanted to tell his side concerning his personal fouls. Don't expect to hear any dirt; there's not much new except that Jose has a new sports car on order.

In addition to Canseco defending his name, the taped pay-to-listen line includes his updated reports on A's games and an exclusive account of Jose's day. After the game Sunday, Jose ate a late lunch. Then he got on the plane. He played cards. "I'm a veteran spades player," he says.

Jose had seafood fettucine: "Two helpings." Jose says the players get bored. They start throwing food. "It starts with small stuff like pieces of bread and peas like when you were kids," he says, "then it's all-out war. Food fight. It's the highlight of the flight." A fine example for youth, isn't he? Jose meets his wife.

Waits 45 minutes for his luggage. He stops at Wendy's. "I'm at home talking to you. Maybe we'll watch Arsenio Hall." Really, Jose? Wow! "Call tomorrow for a new and exciting message," he says. Oh, I don't think I could stand anymore excitement for $10, Jose.

Talked to my good buddy Jose Canseco on Monday. You know, the Oakland A's slugging outfielder. Yes, sir that's one of the privileges of being in this business and having the right connections. The stars are only a phone call away. Yep, Jose and as close as we are, can talk about anything.

He told me all about that steroid rap. And I listened sympathetically as he talked about why he got arrested for carrying a weapon and for speeding at 120 m.p.h. in his Porsche. Oh, and Jose, my main man, told me a lot of other personal stuff. And to think it cost me just under $10 for Jose's time! That's right, under $10! You, too, can be Jose's close, personal friend for a price! Why, it's the Jose Canseco Hotline.

Call 1-900-234-JOSE. (Children, please get permission from your parents before making a call. They may have to make mortgage payments.) I'm Jose Canseco," Canseco says in his TV ad for the hotline. "I want to speak to you, so call 1-900-234-JOSE. I'll give you the latest scoop on baseball and what's happening in my personal life.

If you want to know if I take steroids, how fast I drive or why I was carrying that gun, call me at 1-900-234-JOSE." Well, it certainly didn't take long for Canseco to get over the depression and embarrassment he felt for being a naughty boy, did it? Wanted that steroid mess to be forgotten, didn't he? Now the guy turns the bad press into profit. (It's $2 for the first minute, $1 for each additional minute.) "Press 1 on your touch-tone phone to hear Jose talk about yesterday's game and about his personal life. To hear Jose discuss the topics of steroids, his ownership of guns or about speeding, press 2. Ingenious. What will Jose do next to keep those calls coming? Armed robbery? Hijack the team plane? Hey, it's an age when sports stars seize the monetary moment.

Once some baseball players started charging fans for autographs this should be a felony it only was a matter of time before they reached out and fleeced someone. Canseco says the hotline originated Commissioner might be named on Oct.

10 Free Preai Wire Report! CINCINNATI NFL owners will meet Oct. 10 in either Chicago or Dallas to attempt to elect a new commissioner, the league said Monday. It will be the second try at finding a replacement for Pete Rozelle, who announced March 22 was retiring after 29 years as commissioner. The first meeting was in Chicago on July 6. Jim Finks, president of the New Orleans Saints and the only candidate recommended by the selection committee, fell three votes short of the 19 needed for election at that meeting.

The other 11 teams abstained Houston was not present at the vote saying they want more information. Since then, a new search committee consisting of a combination of the two groups has attempted to find other candidates. However, Finks remains the front-runner. Paul Tagliabue, the NFL's Washington lawyer was considered the other most likely candidate when deliberations began. Several of the dissident owners have recommended instead that someone with a business background be named to the post.

ATLANTA: The Falcons are sticking with an original estimate that quarterback Chris Millar would miss three to four weeks with a rib Injury after he was unable to see the team physician Monday. Miller will undergo further X-rays today. Miller was Injured Sunday In the final minute of the third quarter when he was sacked by Indianapolis' Etta Johnson. passes (68.2 percent) for 264 yards with three touchdowns and one ception. Schembechler is impressed with his poise under pressure.

What happens when Taylor returns? "Let's don't worry about that," Schembechler said. "Elvis will be in for the next two games. That's for We'll see how Michael does when he comes back. We'll see how rusty he is. But he'll be our quarterback when we get him back healthy.

"His back's the only problem now. His arm is OK, but he will not throw this week." Starting linebacker J.J. Grant missed practice Monday with an abrasion of his left eye. "I'll be OK tomorrow," said Grant, who is wearing a protective patch. "It happened in the UCLA game.

One of their guards poked me in the eye twice." Schembechler said reserve linebackers Marc Spencer and Rusty Fichtner had recovered from minor injuries and were probable. Tailback Tony Boles and flanker Chris Calloway suffered ankle injuries at UCLA but are practicing. KICKING GAME: Plackicker J.D. Carlson is Sports Illustrated's offensive player of the week for hitting field goals of 47, 36, 43 and 24 yards against UCLA. The shortest and last kick won the game, 24-23, with one second left.

Now we've got to get him the ball." Spartans' big challenge: A 1-2 punch Spartans, from Page ID The offense is not to be confused with the Lions' run 'n' shoot, which uses four wide receivers. "It's a drop-back offense," Pedes said. "They'll do a little bootleg, but this is drop-back.

They re sitting back in the pocket and getting the protection and running all the combinations, depending on if you're in man or zone underneath or double zone or combo. It's not run 'n' shoot." Perles said he will concede the' short passes to Miami in hopes of knocking the ball loose with some hard hitting. What he doesn't want is for Miami's speedsters to get deep for big gains. 'Wide receivers Wesley Carroll (113 yards against Wisconsin), Dale Daw-kins (114 vs. Wisconsin), Randal Hill (108 vs.

California) and tight end Rob Chudzinski (101 vs. Missouri) already have 100-yard receiving games. "We've been through this with the Mike White era at Illinois and now with John Mackovic and against Miami of Ohio," Perles said. "We understand that they're going to catch some of the, balls, and we understand that they're going to pick up some yardage. Part of our defense is trying to jar the ball loose.

"We can't disregard their running game. They have a few things they do, and they do them very well." Miami stops the run better than it moves the ball on the ground. Missouri was held to minus-44 yards rushing. With tailback Blake Ezor out with a shoulder injury, Michigan State will depend mostly on tailbacks Hyland Hickson and Scott Selzer, and perhaps -TicoDuckett. Hickson ran 26 times for 84 yards against Notre Dame.

He returned and played In the second half, but said later he didn't remember anything about the first 30 minutes of the game.

Hebert also suffered a sprained ankle In the game. PHOENIX: Running back Stump Mitchell might be lost for the season after suffering ligament damage to his left knee Sunday against the New York Giants. NFL pass rusher faces double-teams or similar schemes every game, but such playaj-s as Taylor, Smith, White and Hampton still sack the quarterback. Fontes somehow must get that kind of pass rush performance from his defense, or the secondary will have more long, miserable days as it had against Chicago. Cornerback Jerry Holmes took the brunt of criticism for biting on several pump fakes by quarterback Mike Tomczak, leaving receivers open for long receptions.

"A lot of times he had outside technique and it was the safety's fault," Fontes said. "He was closest to the play, but it wasn't always his fault." The safety in question was William White, who also was blamed for long gains. The Lions' so-called mystery defense, trying to use their linebackers, was no help. "We played it twice," Fontes said. "It wasn't very mysterious to Chicago." If there was one bright spot in the loss, it was the continued improvement of the stretch offense.

Rookie running back Barry Sanders carried 18 times for 126 yards and caught a pass for 10 yards before suffering a hip pointer in the third quarter. NOTEBOOK: Holmes was so distressed after the Chicago game he said he might consider retirement. He was back at practice Monday. Running back Carl Painter, who replaced Sanders, suffered a sprained ankle oil his second carry and probably will miss the next three or four games. That leaves one healthy back Tony Paige.

Free Press Wire Report Manager Frank Robinson knows better than anyone just how fragile are the accomplishments of his miracle-seeking Baltimore Orioles. Entering the season's final week, the Orioles have a chance to win their first division title since 1983 and become the first team to jump from last place one year to first place the next. But Robinson, while not discounting his team's chances of overtaking the Toronto Blue Jays, is concerned the Orioles do nothing to tarnish what has already been a marvelous season. "What I don't want is for us to fall flat on our faces the last six games, because that's what will stick with people and with us," Robinson said. "I don't want (the players) thinking about something like that all winter long.

We don't want that." Baltimore lost two of three games during a home weekend series with the New York Yankees. But the Orioles lost no ground to the Blue Jays, remaining one game off the pace in the American League East entering Monday night. Baltimore has the luxury of deciding its fate. The Orioles Monday night opened a three-game series in Milwaukee. After an off day Thursday, Baltimore takes to the road for its three-game showdown with Toronto.

It will mark the first time the teams have met since Toronto supplanted Baltimore in first place Sept. 1, ending the Orioles' stint of 98 straight days atop the division. "It's in our hands and that's all you can ask for," Robinson said. "If we take care of our business, we'll be fine. They understand what they have to do.

We have to win four or five games in a row." Baltimore has won six of 10 games this season against the Blue Jays. If the teams are tiedafter Sunday, a one-game playoff would be played in Baltimore next Monday. The Orioles sustained their 15th shutout loss of the season, 2-0 against the Yankees Sunday, wasting a chance to draw even with the Blue Jays, who lost 8-3 to the Brewers. "This club has come back time and again from losses," Robinson said. "I can't tell what this team's frame of mind is, but all I know is it's a team that has confidence in itself." After sending Pete Harnish (4-9), Dave Johnson (4-6) and Bob Milacki (13-12) to the mound against the Brewers, the Orioles will open the Blue Jays series with their ace, Jeff Ballard (18-8), then come back with Johnson and Milacki.

The Orioles, at 84-72 entering Monday night, already have become only the 11th team since 1900 to post a winning record after losing at least 100 games the previous season. Baltimore, 54-107 in 1988, also has executed the greatest season-to-season improvement since divisional play was instituted in 1969 and needs 89 victories to set the record for most games improved from one season to the next. The Orioles closed their home season with a crowd of 51,173, their second largest of the year. Baltimore topped 2.5 million in home attendance for the first time with a team mark of 2,534,875. That was some 400,000 more than any other season in a season some feared would be a disaster.

1 1 LIONS, from Page ID agent defensive linemen for workouts each week, but teams don't find effective pass rushers on the street. The best ones such players as Lawrence Taylor of the New York Giants, Reggie White of Philadelphia, Bruce Smith of Buffalo and Dan Hampton of Chicago are drafted, developed and protected like family heirlooms. The Lions thought they had a player of that caliber in 1987 when they drafted Reggie Rogers on the first round. He had barely begun developing in 1988 when he was involved in a car accident that killed three people and left him with a broken neck, facing legal charges. The Lions' best chance of defensive improvement is to get their best players to play better.

The defense last season showed signs of becoming a dominant unit. Cofer, who held out during training camp for a reported contract, is the team's best weapon but has not been effective. Offensive tackles simply steer him wide and Cofer's momentum carries him past the quarterback, out of the play. It happened twice against the Bears, and on another play he stunted into the Bears' backfield, leaving wide open spaces for Neal Anderson to launch his 53-yard touchdown run. "We brought him a few times (as a pass rusher)," Fontes said.

"We didn't bring him as much as we should have. "They are scheming to block Mike Cofer now. They're blocking him with a tackle and a back. That's why we dropped him in coverage more often." That is not exactly a new or unexpected blocking scheme. Evry top Cash for Cards, Pubs, Bats Sports Memorabilia 10-4 PM Sep.
