8C DETROIT FREE PRESSFRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 1990 Singer who wanted a guest shot gets his own show mm F. KOKM Family fare dent-teaching. That led to Cappelli's current occupation. The CappeUis have four children, aged IV2, 4, 7Vz and 8V2, and Patty continues to steer Frank's career. "We're in show business," he said.

"I'm the show and she's the business." I -hiiii I'-umu 1 Vi i j) Frank Cap-pelli wasn't having a very good day. The radio and TV stations in Pittsburgh, his hometown, weren't interested in giving a comparatively unknown singer-songwriter valuable talk show time to discuss the two children's records he had just re man hailed him. "Aren't you Frank Cappelli?" he name is Joe Heston. I'm the new program manager here and I understand you're doing something with children now." It so happened that one of the goals of the new program manager was to produce a local children's show. "Would you be interested in hosting it?" Frank Cappelli's day had just gotten a whole lot better.

Today, with 39 episodes of his TV show, "Cappelli and Company," behind him, Cappelli expects to have the 52nd episode done by the middle of September and has an eye on syndicating the show or otherwise expanding its audience beyond Pittsburgh. He has four children's albums under his belt now and instead of recording for his own label he's on In addition, has released two video song collections from "Cappelli and Company." Not bad for a man nobody wanted to interview. Cappelli's material is geared toward children aged 2 to 7 and deals with such eternal verities as brushing your teeth, crossing on the green light, the alphabet, the instruments of the orchestra, the joy of train riding and the affection between grandparents and grandchildren. He has a warm, friendly and on-key voice and an obvious enthusiasm for children. Cappelli, 37, has been singing professionally since his teen years.

"All through high school and junior high I worked in nightclubs, even being underage," Cappelli said. "I had a little trio. We found if we went to clubs where our parents would go we'd make more money" than they would playing for other teenagers. "We did Gershwin, we did Cole Porter, the Beatles. We had no social life but we loved it." In college, at West Chester State University, near Philadelphia, Cappelli majored in music education.

Back in Pittsburgh, he and his wife, Patty, launched a singing telegram business, writing personalized musical greetings and employing classically trained singers dressed as bellhops. "We loved it," Cappelli said, but competition from strip-o-gram type outfits induced them to sell the business. That was when Patty had a brainstorm. She reminded him of how much he enjoyed singing and making up songs for children when he was stu ON STAGE: Frank Cappelli and fellow singer-songwriter Linda Arnold perform at 11 a. m.
