Bochco has already supplied ABC with a touch of class, thanks to the new comedy-drama "Hooperman." The first six years of the Bochco deal make him exclusively an ABC creative force.

"Steven has produced outstanding programs of invention, intelligence and unique entertainment," said Brandon Stoddard, president of ABC Entertainment. "We share his strong belief in the desire of the audience for programs that have these qualities." Tuesday marked Mariette Hartley's last day as co-host of the doomed CBS "Morning Program," which departs the airwaves Nov. 27. Hartley is heading back to Hollywood and her acting career, with Sandy Hill arriving Thursday to fill out the final two weeks of the show's run. Ho-hum time.

NBC has given full-season guarantees to "Cosby" spin-off "A Different World" and "My Two Dads," two highly rated but thoroughly blah new comedy series. Hot stuff. "Wiseguy" mobster Sonny Steelgrave, who has been brilliantly played by Ray Sharkey, bids farewell in a two-part tale beginning on a special edition of the new CBS crime series at 10 tonight (Channel 2 in Detroit). The story concludes during the regular weekly episode of "Wiseguy" Thursday night. Rock 'n' roll quality alert.

Be a Pepper too. The excellent documentary "Sgt. Pepper: It Was 20 Years Ago Today" airs at 9 tonight on PBS (Channel 56 in Detroit). Victimized by a ridiculous premise, "Hill Street Blues" alum Kiel Martin has parted ways with the dreadful Fox sitcom "Second Chance." Martin played a smart aleck who dies in 2017 and is sent back from heaven to coax his 15-year-old self into leading a less debauched life. The concept is being dumped and the show revamped into a teenage coming-of-age series, with a January return scheduled.

History alert. "The Divided Union: The Story Behind the Civil War," a fine five-part documentary narrated by George Pep-pard, debuts on the Arts Entertainment channel at 9 tonight. Cosmic goofball Pee-wee Herman brings his Saturday morning show to prime time for a special edition of "Pee-wee's Playhouse" at 8 tonight on CBS (Channel 2 in Detroit). Be there or be square. emerge on television since the heyday of "SCTV" and "Saturday Night Live." He's a shy kind of guy.

And he's a gifted comedy chameleon who also seeks out low-key characters to disappear into for the Ullman show's weekly dose of cutting-edge funny bone theater. "I generally try to play shy people," Castellaneta, who was even too shy to attend his own high school prom, said in a recent phone interview. "I'm sort of attracted to those Woody Allen-type characters." It's not unusual for Castellaneta to play a role in every sketch during "The Tracey Ullman Show." He might be an anxiety-ridden yuppie upset about the vodka-guzzling Fuzzy Bear who's shown up to entertain at his son's birthday party. Or a rich California proctologist involved in a messy divorce encounter with his wife at the lawyer's office in a sketch called "Beverly Hills Proc." Or a Greek painter dancing and painting madly as a berserko housewife (Ullman) sings "Paint It Black" and they do just that to her entire kitchen. Infectious, inventive nuttiness abounds on "The Tracey Ullman Show," and Castellaneta is happy to be along for the ride.

He was spotted by Ullman herself while working at "Second City." And now he's part of one of the most innovative new comedy ensembles on television. There is a definite humor attitude to the Ullman show. "Essentially, what dictates it is that there are no parodies and even if it's an unusual situation, Tracey and (executive producer) Jim Brooks try to keep things believable and real," said Castellaneta. "You've got to be honest." As for his own "Second comedy philosophy, Castellaneta likes to keep people off balance. "Don't ever do what's expected," he said.

"Always try to find a different way of doing something. Always play to the top of your intelligence. A character should be as smart as you are. And if the character isn't as smart as you are, you can't make a comment about it, you can't make fun of the character." Castellaneta said a perceptive audience will see right through a character who isn't done honestly. And he feels the audience that has discovered "The Tracey Ullman Show" is pretty demanding.

"They're people who like something different, they're certainly an intelligent audience," Castellaneta said. "And they're an audience that isn't as easily offended as other people might be." But of course.
