FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1 1, 2 0 0 0 DETROIT FREE PRESS TB Jim Varney: Actor played Ernest, cult figure of '80s Hvnnnrn nn ASSOCIATED Call 1 800 395 3300 "The Beverlv Call 313 222 6802 DEATH PRESS WHITE HOUSE, Tenn. Jim Varney, the comic who portrayed his rube character Ernest from hundreds of television commercials to a series of popular movies, died of lung cancer Thursday at his home. He was 50. Mr. Varney became a cult figure in the 1980s in a series of regional commercials portraying Ernest P.

Worrell, a know-it-all good ol' boy whose best-known phrase was "Know-what-I-mean?" and who addressed an unseen character called Vern. "Ernest is a neighbor or relative that we've all had at one time," he once said. "He's abrasive, but he doesn't mean to be." Between 1987 and 1990, he was in four Ernest movies for Disney. Five more films were released independently, mainly for video and television markets. Mr.

Varney also was the voice of Slinky Dog in "Toy Story" and "Toy Story II." His movie credits include "Ernest Goes to Camp," "Ernest Rides Again," "Ernest Saves Christmas," "Ernest Goes to Jail," "Ernest Scared Stupid," "Ernest Goes to School," "100 Proof," Henry Owens Choir member liked old songs Henry Owens loved singing, gardening, fishing and fine clothes. But most of all he loved spending time with his family and a close network of frjends. "He was the warmest, friendli est person you could ever meet," recalled Fred Butler, a noted church organist who Mr. Owens affectionately called his son. "He was friendly, caring and giving.

He was the best person Henry Owens in the world to have in your corner." Mr. Owens died early Monday in a suspicious fire at his Detroit home. The incident is under investigation by the homicide division of the Detroit Police A Hillbillies" (as Jed Clampett) and "Treehouse Hostage." His TV credits include "Hey Vern, It's Ernest," "Rose-anne," "The Simpsons," Jim Varney "The Rousters," "Alice," "Operation Petticoat," "Fernwood 2-Night" and "Pop Goes the Country." Born in Lexington, Mr. Varney began acting in local theater at age 8. By the age of 16, he was playing Shakespeare in a professional theater.

He sought his acting fortune in New York at 18 and slogged through off-Broadway, dinner theaters and comedy clubs. Mr. Varney received the cancer diagnosis in August 1998, and within months it had spread to his brain. The cancer appeared to be in remission in late 1999 although radiation treatment had left him bald. Despite his illness, in 1999 he filmed the movie "Daddy and Them" starring Billy Bob Thornton.

He was born Jan. 3, 1930, in Thomaston, and moved to Detroit while in his teens. He graduated from Northwestern High School and worked at Ford Motor Co. for about 30 years. After retiring from Ford, he worked in the home health care business.

He was active at Christ Cathedral Baptist Church in Detroit, where he sang in the choir. It was through church choirs that Butler and Mr. Owens met. "He loved to sing," Butler said. "He liked the old songs of the church.

He loved any song that would draw him closer to the Lord and helped him feel God's presence." Survivors include a sister, Johnnie Hankins; a brother, James Owens; seven nephews; a niece, and many other relatives and friends. A family hour will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Christ Cathedral Baptist, 1615 Hartford in Detroit. A funeral will follow at 11 a.m. at the church.
