But the scheme went sour with a shootout and the slaying of his grandmother, police said Monday.

Police gave this account: Posing as a hostage, the grandson went with two friends to his grandparents' home on Karr Road. Failing to get money there, the grandson still pretending to be in danger let his 17-year-old friend force his grandfather, Theodore Guthrie, to accompany them to a bank automatic teller machine.
