DETROIT FREE PRESSTUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1987 3D clntyre's injury leaves Michigan defense crippled By TERRY FOSTER mm MMMg0 have to believe in miracles." Schembechler said it was only the second Achilles tendon tear at Michigan in his almost 19 seasons there. Former linebacker Mike Reinhold missed all of last season with a similar injury sustained in fall practice. "I knew that was it right away," Mclntyre said. "He (Reinhold) told me it felt numb. He couldn't move his foot and had no feeling in his toes.

I did have feeling in my toes and I could move my foot." U-M coaches will spend most of the week shuffling around replacements The starting linebackers are expected to be senior John Wiliingham, juniors Bobby Abrams and J.J. Grant and sophomore John Milligan. Grant was the only projected starter when the last five seasons trying to crack the starting lineup and finally did so last season, starting nine games and finishing second on the team in tackles with 91. Coach Bo Schembechler has called Mclntyre and Thibert the team's best linebackers, but both now are gone, although Thibert is expected to play later this season. "Andree was having a heck of a year," Schembechler said.

"That one was devastating. And Thibert was a guy I felt was really playing well." Mclntyre suffered what Schembechler called a "freak injury" in the third quarter. "I wasn't even hit," Mclntyre said. "I was coming off a block and someone tried to cut me. I felt it pop.

I guess things happen and they happen for a reason. I will just try to come back off it." HE ISN'T expected back, but Mclntyre holds hope. "I'm not going to think that way (of not returning)," he said. "When I got back to my apartment I watched the Ohio State-LSU game. And I began thinking that everyone plays for that (Michigan-Ohio State) game.

"I'm just praying. Maybe the surgeon will say it is not as bad as he'd thought. Just like the little kid that survived that airplane crash in Detroit. People say it was unbelievable. You Free Press Sports Writer ANN ARBOR Andree Mclntyre was a half-hour late for the interview.

"I didn't know it took so long to get around in these things," said Mclntyre, a fifth-year senior linebacker at Michigan. Mclntyre had walked across campus with the aid of crutches because of a torn Achilles tendon in his left ankle. His injury suffered Saturday put a severe damper on the Wolverines' 49-0 victory over Long Beach State. He will undergo surgery today and might miss the rest of the season. But Michigan will need more than a surgeon to repair the desperate situation of its defense at least in time for Saturday's 1 p.m.

Big Ten opener against Wisconsin at Michigan Stadium. With injuries to linebacker Keith Cooper (knee) and Mclntyre, U-M (2-1 has lost seven defensive players five linebackers this season. The other disabled linebackers are Curtis Feaster (infection), Marc Spencer (broken leg) and Steve Thibert (knee). Middle guard Mike Teeter (knee) and tackle Brent White (knee) also are out, and none is expected to play against the Badgers. McINTYRE'S INJURY might have been the most disappointing for the Wolverines.

He has spent most of the season began. Freshman Cornelius Simpson of Highland Park played in the fourth quarter Saturday and won't be red-shirted as previously intended. But Michigan has been blessed with solid play by the line. But the offense is a different story. "We got behind and weren't productive our passing game didn't click," Perles said of Saturday's loss to Florida State. "When you lose, it's always one thing or another.

It's nothing permanent. We don't plan any drastic (lineup) changes." Iowa takes a 3-1 record into the Big Ten season, but hasn't been overly impressive, even in Saturday's 38-13 rout of Kansas State. Minnesota is the only conference team to emerge with a perfect record, but its schedule (Northern Iowa, California and Central Michigan) probably wouldn't intimidate Eastern Michigan.

Pre-season favorite Ohio State also is undefeated, although tied by Top 10 power Louisiana State. "We've bumped into three pretty tough teams," Perles said. "We're lucky we don't have a lot of people banged up. We just hope we got some work against good people that will have a carry-over effect in our Big Ten season. "I'm optimistic.

Hey, I've been through this before in the NFL. You win six exhibition games and you're still 0-0. Or you go 3-3, it doesn't matter." Perles is convinced his defense is solid. "The only thing against Florida State was that the reverses hurt us, By JACK SAYLOR Free Press Sports Writer Some Michigan State football fans have been jumping from the bandwagon faster than the helmsman departed the Titanic. But while admitting his team has bumped into an iceberg or two, coach George Perles is far from ready to abandon ship after one-sided losses to Notre Dame (31-8) and Florida State (31-3).

"That's one advantage to being in a conference; it makes no difference who you play in the non-conference games, all start 0-0 this week," Perles said Monday as he looked toward MSU's conference opener Saturday at Iowa 1 2:30 p.m., Channel 7 in Detroit). "For instance, Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue always play Notre Dame. Others play, shall we say, non-rated teams. We all play different non-conference games for one reason or another. Is it better to play non-rated teams or is it better to play a tough, schedule? No one knows.

The answer comes out in what happens at the end of the season." Michigan State has faced three Utoh) off yiyj feyjpff to swffe yw fay ttf A Perles said. Hawkeyes coach Hayden Fry said Monday that sophomore quarterback Dan McGwire the younger brother of Oakland A's first baseman Mark McGwire will start against the Spartans. Fry had been juggling McGwire, Chuck Hartlieb and Tom Poholsky at the position. "They're each very different and the team changes style with each one to emphasize what each can do," Perles said. "That presents problems." Miami, Florida Irish move up When was the last time you had your brakes checked? Or your front end aligned?
