Braves' farm system finds Michigan fertile Why do the Atlanta Braves have so many prospects from Michigan? Tony Stiel, the Braves' top Midwest talent scout, gives much of the credit to the team's expanded farm system, which includes eight minor league teams. "Obviously we think there is talent here, and with as many minor league teams as we have we can give a lot of kids the opportunity that they wouldn't normally get," Stiel said. "We also have time to develop them now. In some other organizations if a kid has two or three bad outings in a row they start pushing the panic button." Pitchers John Smoltz and Marty Clary and minor leaguer Steve Avery are the most high-profile Michi-ganders in the Braves' system, but they aren't alone. Others include second baseman Dan Snover (Bay City), shortstop Rich Maloney (Roseville) and pitchers Chris Czarnik (Detroit), Michael Gabriele (Detroit), Joe Roa (Hazel Park) and Dave Karasinski (University of Michigan).

This week Atlanta signed Rick Karcher, an outfielder from North Farmington High and Henry Ford Community College, who will report to spring training next year. Karcher, who played for Adray Appliance this summer, will be converted to first base. The Braves just traded another Michigander, pitcher Paul Assenmacher (Southgate Aquinas), who was dealt to the Chicago Cubs Thursday. Ron Wellman, then Northwestern baseball coach, talked Clary into resuming his baseball career and helped develop him into a pitcher as a junior rather than just the hard thrower he was as a freshman and sophomore. "He taught me how to do things like change speeds," Clary said Tuesday in a phone interview.

"I went 10-1 in my junior year and decided to go with the Braves." After a couple of seasons in the minors and pitching in winter leagues, Clary had rotator cuff problems that required surgery in 1985. "I think it was a case of trying to throw too hard too soon in the winter," Clary said. Even after he regained his arm strength, Clary remained in the Braves' farm system. But he said he stuck with baseball rather than returning to finish college because "I was determined to give myself every chance." That chance finally came in June when Clary, who wasn't on the Braves' 40-man major league roster, was called up to Atlanta from Triple-A Richmond. Though Clary has finally made it to the majors, he said the educational process hasn't stopped.

"1 like to sit and talk about baseball with Darrell Evans," Clary said. "He knows so much about the game and is really good about explaining things." Clary has been impressive in his brief time in the majors, but said he's not counting on having a spot for next year. "1 hope the Braves give me a chance to be a starter for them next season," Clary said. Viola, who won the award for the Twins last season, pitched the Mets to a 1-0 victory over Hershiser and LA. It was believed to be the first time two Cy Young award winners from the previous year faced each other during the next regular season. The victory lifted Viola to 2-3 with the Mets since he was traded July 31. In Viola's five starts, the Mets have totaled six runs.

It's the first time in 29 years the Tigers have lost the first nine games of a trip. The Tigers, falling an unbelievable 40 games below .500, scored five times in the sixth for an 8-6 lead.

But Kansas City re-took the lead for good with three runs in the sixth off loser Steve Searcy, and added three more in the seventh off Paul Gibson. "I don't know if I can really say how bad all this feels," Searcy said. "I know I feel fine, but I'm making mental mistakes, and they're killing me." The faces in the Tigers' clubhouse were exceptionally somber, even by the standards of this losing streak and horrible season. Unlike several other games in the streak, this one was winnable, from the pitching match-up Morris against Luis Aquino right through the five-run rally in the sixth. In the next two nights here, the Tigers will face the Royals' two aces, Mark Gubicza and Bret Saberhagen.

Morris sat at his locker stall, staring angrily, and perhaps inwardly. He had appeared to lose his composure while Kansas City was scoring twice off him in both the fourth and fifth. "Jack didn't have good control, and he Couldn't get ahead of hitters with his fastball," Royals manager John Wathan said. "He couldn't use his fastball to set up his forkball." It's hard to envision the Tigers returning to respectability next season if Morris is not effective. He, like Jeff Robinson, had been making a strong return from the disabled list until this trit 1 Botu right-hander have been pounded in their two starts on this trip.

But the Royals, despite winning 11 of 13 entering Tuesday, hadn't been crushing anybody lately. They had scored a total of five runs in their last four games. They exceeded that total against Morris in five innings. Morris couldn't hold early leads of 1-0 and 3-1. About all Kansas City didn't do against him was hit a homer, but four of the 10 hits off him were doubles.

With the score 3-3 in the fourth, Morris balked while throwing an intentional ball four to George Brett. That sent Willie Wilson from second to third, and he scored the go-ahead run on Bo Jackson's sacrifice fly. Jim Eisenreich doubled to start the KC fifth, then stole third, apparently riling Morris. He brushed back Danny Tartabul! with the next pitch, and eventually fanned him. Then Kurt Stillwell doubled in Eisenreich to make it 5-3.
