Matt Houston Cosby nun I lion Oame Duncan, 42, star of NBC-TV's "Hogan Family" (8:30 Mondays on WDIV-TV, Channel 4), is Aunt Sandy in the hit sitcom a role she landed when series star Valerie IT edges she used to do just that. Especially when interviewers asked about her two failed marriages and a tumor that caused her to lose the vision in her left eye. "Not exactly perky things," she said, laughing. "Oh, and did I mention I was also mugged once?" Now she's perky and proud.

"Golly. Let me tell you," she said, "it's made me a lot of money, so I don't exactly mind anymore." The money is one reason Duncan says she laughs when interviewers ask her "about the hard work involved in doing a series." "I've always wanted to say 'Excuse me, but do you know how much money people make to star in TV "What's so exhausting? They're crazy. My dad ran a gas station and I don't believe that beating the pavement for 15 hours a day, in the Texas heat, was any piece of cake." But taking over for popular Valerie' Harper last year was no slice of either. The spotlight was on. Duncart worried viewers would be alienated.

"Obviously," she said, "the subject' keeps coming up because what hap-, pened is pretty much a precedent." I Duncan does like "The Hogan Family" for what she says is a more realistic portrayal of family life. "We're not doing brain surgery. But I like the fact' that the adults are intelligent. On a lot Sandy Duncan was axea. But isn Duncan miscast in teddies? Well, no.

"I always wear them," she said. And she's as comfortable in them as in her perky image. "People had this tendency to put me down for it. Well, perky is certainly a facet of my personality. I can't deny that.

It's part of my bag of tricks as an actress I'm the girl that can blush on cue. I'm not insecure about it anymore." Then she added, with a smile, "I'm a happy person am I supposed to apologize?" Collins' is fine as an old fashioned rough-but-smooth hero, and Cook as the stuffy headwaiter steals I every scene he inhabits. Still, the best scene is the simplest: a strained, funny breakfast with the fractured Tattinger's. This is not J4'Family Ties," but, thank goodness, it's not "Roseanne" either. The teen 1 daughters, played by Patrice Colihan and Chay Lentin, have wonderful lines that would fall flat if they were repro-' duced here in print, because they are tee: They are the kind of things real people say to each other in everyday situations, heightened ever so slightly.

Between the gorgeous black-and-white opening credits and a quiet last scene between Collins and Danner, a lot happens in this first hour, maybe too much. Some of the jokes are terrible, some of the lines are lost, some are just not there in the first place. Still, "Tattinger's" overcomes its own flaws and promises to get better for as long as it is around to do so. Watch this show. If you don't and somebody asks you if you did, lie.
