The Indians broke it open with three runs in the ninth against relievers Bob Kipper and Carl Willis. Twins starter Willie Banks (3-3) allowed five hits in a career-high eight innings, but was hurt by first-inning wildness.

The Twins lost for the seventh time in 30 games. Banks, coming off a July 12 start against Baltimore in which he lasted less than three innings, retired the first two batters of the game before walking Carlos Baerga on four pitches. Baerga took second on a wild pitch and scored on Albert Belle's single. Paul Sorrento, a member of the Twins' 1991 World Series championship team, followed with an RBI double. The Twins closed to 2-1 in the fifth inning when Chuck Knoblauch singled with two out and scored on Shane Mack's double.

The Indians scored three times in the ninth on Thomas Howard's two-run single and Sandy Alomar RBI single. Milwaukee 5, Texas 4: B. J. Surhoff hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth Inning for the Brewers. Milwaukee, which scored three times in the eighth to tie it, won after Greg Vaughn, who homered ea'lier, led off with a wajk from Edwin Nunez (1-3) Robin Yount followed with a btoop single off second baseman Jeff Huson's glove.

The hit moved Yount into sole possession of 18th place on the all-time hit list with 2,965. Daryl HamiltorjttValked to load the bases and Dante Bichette died to short left. Surhotf hit a medium fly to centerfield, and Vaughn easily beat a wide throw from Juan Gonzalez. Darren Holmes (3-3) pitched one inning for the victory. The Brewers rallied in the eighth after Surhoff singled, finishing Bobby Witt.

Scott Fletcher hit a fly ball that Gonzalez dropped Jor a two-base error and Pat Ustach hit a two-run triple off Kenny Rogers. Nunez gave up Kevin Seitzer's sacrifice fly. "That's what happened," Knudsen said. "I finally realized I'd made it and that other people knew it." Knudsen reflected Monday, a day after the Tigers finished a four-game series in Oakland, his first visit as a major leaguer to a park where he grew up watching games. He's from the greater Sacramento area, about a 1-hour, 20-minute drive from Oakland. Dozens of supporters, mostly family, attended all four games.

Some live in the Bay Area; others made the 2V2-hour round-trip every day. They saw him get a save in his only appearance. "I was even more pumped up than normal," said Knudsen, who pitched a 1-2-3 ninth Friday night. His fans included several of his Little League coaches, including one that tried to trade him for the All-Star catcher. "Another pitcher on our team was the best in the area, and my team needed a catcher," Knudsen said.

"The trade wound up not happening, and I wound up winning the championship game. I'll never let him forget that, either." He laughed at the memory. Knudsen credited teammates Rob Deer and Dan Gladden with helping him handle the attention. They told him to be thankful that so many people remembered him and cared about him. CALL FOR ARMS: Manager Sparky Anderson wouldn't rule out the possibility that the Tigers will recall a pitcher from Triple-A Toledo to start this weekend in California.

That pitcher Greg Gohr or David Haas are top candidates would take the rotation spot that Walt Terrell stepped into on Monday night. "We'll be going start-to-start with that spot," Anderson said. NOTES: Gary Pettis started in center Monday for his first game with the Tigers in 2Vz years. Centerfielder Milt Cuyler hasn't played since Friday because of a sore right knee; Anderson said he didn't want to use him on the Kingdome's artificial turf, a less forgiving surface than grass. An arbitrator's ruling that teams don't have five years to sign drafted players won't affect the Tigers' negotiations with their top, pick, right-handed reliever Rick Greene of LSU.

Because Greene was drafted out of high school, the Tigers have until Dec. 31 to sign him (it would have been when college classes begin in the fall, but the deadline for Greene is longer because he made the U.S. Olympic team). Anderson said Mike Henneman has recovered from his arm strain but that he'll be cautious and won't let him pitch until at least Thursday. Third baseman Scott Livingstone returned to the lineup after missing two games because of a swollen right eye.

When he awoke Monday, almost all the swelling was gone. He still visited a Seattle eye doctor as planned. "The doctor said it had something to do with oil in my duct glands," said Livingstone, who had the same problem in spring training. Chuck McElroy (3-5) stopped that threat, but was charged with both runs in the seventh. Scott Ruskin (4-1) pitched a scoreless seventh in relief of Tom Bolton for the win; Rob Dibble struck out all five batters he faced for his 13th save. Bolton made his first start for the Reds since his trade from the Red Sox. The Cubs scored in the first when Ryne Sandberg singled, Bolton hit Mark Grace, and Steve Buechele singled.
