6C DETROIT FREE PRESS E BASEBALL TUESDAY, MARCH 7 , 2 0 0 0 f Martinez passes test in first spring outing Bosox ace shows no sign of shoulder injury AROUND THE HORN f REE PRESS SEWS SERVICES PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -Pedro Martinez's first pitch of the exhibition season was a ball. His first outing was a loss. His first impressions were obvious in the smile on his face. He was healthy again. There was no sign of the injury below his right shoulder blade that plagued him in last year's playoffs. "Everything went fine. Those are not the results I would like," Martinez said Monday. "I just wanted to see how I felt in a game because after last season I never faced a batter. This is the first time. It's a big test." Using mostly fastballs, Martinez allowed three runs on three hits a double, triple and homer while throwing 32 pitches in the first two innings. He got the loss in the Texas Rangers' 13-6 win over the Bos-. ton Red Sox. There was one notable confrontation. In the first inning, Martinez faced Ivan (Pudge) Rodriguez "!, with one out and a runner on i third. The Rangers' catcher " edged Martinez for the Ameri- can League Most Valuable Play-, er award last season when two writers left Martinez off their ballots because they didn't think , pitchers should get the award. Martinez won this much less important matchup, getting Rodriguez on a called strike on the outside corner, i "I like challenges," Martinez said. "Pudge is one of the players I like to face and he's going to be one of the players that I want to face most of the time in spring training so I know how to get him out." Martinez's next outing will be Saturday night in his native Dominican Republic against Houston. "His delivery was good. He wasn't trying to overthrow at all," Boston manager Jimy Williams said. "How much weight do you put into the first time out? Let's be honest here. Or the second time out? The main thing is he's healthy." Former Tiger Gabe Kapler scored Texas' second run on a triple and a wild pitch. Then Luis Alicea homered. Cleveland; Manager Charlie Manuel, who was released from a Winter Haven, Fla., hospital Sunday, is not expected to return to the club until Wednesday. Manuel, 56, had emergency colon surgery Feb. 28. While Manuel is out, the Indians are being jointly managed by bench coach Grady Little, third-base coach Jim Riggelman and pitching coach Dick Pole. Manuel, who has had two heart attacks and open-heart surgery, replaced Mike Hargrove as Indians manager In November. . . . The Indians re-signed infielder Enrique Wilson. Wilson, 24, batted .262 with two home runs and 24 runs batted in last season. Wilson, who spent time at shortstop, third base and second base, started 99 games. N.Y. Yankees: Orlando Hernandez said his ailing back felt good Monday after his first throwing session from a bullpen mound in almost one week. The right-hander missed his first scheduled start Saturday because of mild back stiffness. STANDOUTS Tom Glavine, Braves: Pitched two hitless innings in his first outing of the spring as Atlanta defeated the Toronto Blue Jays, 12-2. Brian Jordan, Marcus Giles and Jeff Horn homered for the Braves. Brad Radke, Twins: Allowed one run and three hits in three innings as Minnesota defeated the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 4-1. Minnesota's Todd Walker went 2-for-3 and Brian Richardson hit a two-run single in the eighth. Aramis Ramirez, Pirates: Went 3-for-4 with a grand slam as Pittsburgh defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 11-4. Ramirez, who is trying to earn a starling job at third base, is 6-for-10 with seven RBIs this spring. Cincinnati's Chris Stynes had two hits and two RBIs, including a home run off Kris Benson leading off the game. Richie Sexson, Indians: Drove in four runs with a home run and a double as Cleveland defeated the Yankees, 1 5-1 . Cleveland's Jaret Wright pitched two hitless innings in his spring debut. Wright, trying to hang on to the fifth spot in the starting rotation, needed just 18 pitches to retire his six batters. Indians second baseman Roberto Alomar singled twice and hit a two-run home run off starter David Cone, who allowed three runs in 2 innings. TIGERS I New park nearly ready From Page 1C park wouldn't be completed by Tuesday afternoon April 11, when the Tigers play host to the Seattle Mariners. Project manager Sid Perkins assured that Comerica Park would be ready despite appearances that might lead the skeptical to another conclusion. Giant cardboard boxes of green metal seats and ceiling panels clogged pedestrian concourses still dusty with construction residue. Swanky restaurants and club lounges have yet to be fitted out. Overhead duct work is exposed. Still, inside the seating bowl, where crews moved at a brisk pace, building clearly has moved into its final phase. The sea of dark green seats is in place, except for a narrow patch along the rightfield line and in the Tiger Den section behind the box seats in the infield. The playing field itself, which will "green up a lot more," according to architect Joe Spear of HOK Sport, already looks nearly playable. The pitchers mound and home plate are covered by tarps, but the retro-looking walkpath between them that Ilitch called for is in place. Soon, too, Tigers spokesman Tyler Barnes said, will be the home plate taken from Tiger Stadium after last year's last stand at The Corner. A centerfield flag pole is coming, too, although that will be a . replacement since the city of Detroit wouldn't allow removal of the Tiger Stadium original. The infield, its skin muddied for now from some combination of snow melt and sprinkling, appears to need nothing more than a little TLC from a crack grounds crew. And, from- the concrete block concourse walls to the insides of the dugouts, there was painting. Dark green for the dugouts, mint green and light brown for the walls, depending on their location. "The weather couldn't be better. They're getting a lot of paint- TODAY: BRAVES Matchup: Tigers vs. Atlanta, 1 ;05 p.m., Joker Marchant Stadium, Lakeland, Fla. Radio: WJR-AM (760). Pitchers: Detroit Hideo Nomo, Willie Blair, Ramon Tatis, Erik Hiljus, Edgar Ramos, Matt Anderson, Bart Evans. Atlanta Terry Mulholland, Kerry Ligtenberg, Paul Assenmacher, Luis Rivera, Matt Belisle, Derrick Lewis. ing done," said John Buffone, vice president of architecture for Little Caesar Enterprises Inc. "You need to have a break with the weather." The giant outfield scoreboard got a workout as well. The video portion of the display was installed just last week and testing was being conducted Monday, revealing a flickering pattern of electric lights. Beyond the outfield wall was some old construction the downtown Detroit skyline. The low-rise outfield stands allow for a panoramic view that takes in buildings such as the Renaissance Center, the Detroit Athletic Club and the Blue Cross offices. Because of Comerica Park's exceptionally open design, fans at the game can look out on the Detroit street scene from several vantage points on the concourse, allowing them to see Brush Park and the site of Ford Field as well. Inside fan areas are nearing completion, too. The ballyhooed carousel, located in a concourse area called "Big Cat Court," is in place. A flip up of the canvas covering the carousel showed tigers resting on their riding poles. Architect Spear, who remembers not long ago when Comerica Park was little more than a shell, said it's coming together. "When they put the field in, all of a sudden it seemed smaller," he said. "And then, when the stands came in, that made it even smaller and more intimate. When the stands are full, well, it'll be even better vet." Contact DAVID A. MARKIEWICZ at 313-223-4759 or markiewicz 'p rfreeprcss.com Relief: Left-hander Poole displays the right stuff TIGERS CORNER By JOHN LOWE rut t )'Kts sPORIS W R I i t R CLEARWATER, Fla. - The worse that things got for the Tigers' defense in the ninth inning Monday, the better they got for veteran lefthander Jim Poole. From two straight batters, Poole got the potential game-ending grounder he needed. Detroit's minor league infielders misplayed both, capping a three-error inning that handed the host Phillies two unearned runs and a 5-4 victory. Not counting a hitter who sacrificed, Poole faced seven batters over his l'i innings, and using primarily his new sinker got all seven to hit the ball on the ground. The' ninth-inning errors let him keep getting grounders and keep showing that he can fill the Tigers' most critical vacancy: left-handed reliever. "Poole has pitched well," manager Phil Garner said. "He pitched well the other day" ;a scoreless inning in his other outing "and he pitched well today." Poole, 33, has pitched in more than 400 big-league games. He has contributed to several successful teams. But he's done it by relying often on his curve. Tigers pitching coach Dan "Warthen has encouraged him to try the sinker. "Ever since I was a little kid, I've tried to throw one, but I've never had command of it," Poole said. "This is probably the first spring training that I've felt confident I could throw it anytime. The results the last few years (he had a combined 5:00 ERA and was let go by three clubs) demanded that J make some adjustments. "For whatever reason experience, desperation the two-seamer is starting to click a little bit." spending PAYS OIT: Will Comerica Park allow the Tigers to have the player payroll worthy of a contender and still make a profit? Club president John McHale believes it will. "Our ambition is to be solidly in the upper half of clubs in payroll," McHale said on a spring-training ' visit. "I don't think we need to be ' in the top three, the top five, the top 10 necessarily. We have to be high enough so we have the chance to compete in the postseason on a regular basis." Last season, all eight playoff clubs finished in the top 10 in player payroll. Houston had the lowest payroll of a playoff club at $56 million. The Tigers' payroll this season could be that high. McHale said it will be "in the low-to-mid 50s." That's up about $20 million from last year, when the Tigers ranked 22nd among the 30 big-league clubs in their final year in revenue-limited Tiger Stadium. One reason the Tigers likely will never be the payroll leader: They don't make nearly as much from local broadcasting rights as teams that play in the largest me-idia markets, such as New York. McHale says he hasn't thought 'how high the Tigers' payroll can go if Comerica Park meets all money-making projections. notebook: In his first spring outing Monday, right-hander Jeff Weaver threw a new pitch, the cut fastball, that might help him better contain left-handed batters. The cut fastball ideally will run in on left-handers. As a rookie last season, Weaver allowed lefty hitters a prolific .377 on-base percentage. ... OBilly McMillon, bidding to be the back-up centerfielder, gave the Tigers the lead in the eighth by walloping a two-run opposite-field homer to right-center off Carlos Reyes. . . . The Tigers announced that the entire 40-man roster is now under contract. Pitchers Weaver, Sean Runyan and Ramon Tatis; catchers Javier Cardona and Robert Fick; and outfielder Juan Encarnacion agreed to terms for the qpcoming season. The Tigers also renewed the contract of relief pitcher Matt Anderson. The Tigers released veteran outfielder Marc Newfield, who played for Garner in Milwaukee.
