Right-hander Charles Nagy became the American League's first six-game winner by throwing a complete-game seven-hitter.

The game drew 40,765, the Indians' 64th straight home sellout, tying Baltimore's American League record. The Indians, who are sold out for every game this season, will break that record tonight. Well, this game might have reinforced to Bell how much he wanted to be a manager: He would rather be guiding the last-place Tigers than serving as the dugout and infield coach for the mighty Indians, as he did the last two seasons. Tuesday night's defeat lowered Bell's record as a manager to 12-28. The night began nicely enough.

At the request of his good friend, Tribe manager Mike Hargrove, Bell met Hargrove at home plate to exchange the lineup cards. Then Tigers starter Greg Gohr retired the first six Indians in order, not allowing a ball out of the infield. But Gohr (2-5, 6.60 ERA) made it no farther in trying to become the first Tigers pitcher to win back-to-back starts this season. In the space of the next nine batters, the Tribe produced three homers, a double and its five runs. In his 4-2 victory in New York last Thursday, Gohr repeatedly got into and out of trouble.

Tuesday night, trouble erupted in unstoppable flashes. "I know what those guys can do," Bell said. "It's more scary from this side." Manny Ramirez began the third by homering to left-center on a 1-1 pitch. Two outs later, Kenny Lofton singled, stole his 27th base of the season and scored on Julio Franco's opposite-field double to right. Albert Belle began the next inning with a single, extending his hitting streak to 15 games.

Eddie Murray, awakening from an early season slumber, lofted his third homer of the season and 482nd of his career just over the fence in right-center. Jim Thome, the next hitter, launched an opposite-field homer to left. Thome, the third baseman who was Bell's special project, has homered in four straight games. "Greg didn't have good location," said Bell, who hooked Gohr a few batters after the five-run deluge. "Against a team like this, you can't afford to leave a lot of stuff out over the plate." "I can't believe that you have to be on the black (the corners) with every pitch," said Gohr, who has allowed 13 homers in 45 innings.

"But tonight, any mistake I made seemed to leave the 11111 .324 1 1 1 2 0 .258 2 4 2 0 0 0 0 0 .283 0 0 0 1 1 .298 30 5 7 5 5 000 010 000-1 7 1 Detroit Cleveland 002 300 0Ox-5 7 0 iiiWMWitiiriiiiwiiiiiiiiiiiiiMn MLewis (31. Bell said the Tigers' struggles have mitigated any homecoming emotion he might feel in Cleveland, where he also began his playing career. "Right now, I don't know where I am," he said afterward. "I could be in Detroit, I could be in New York.

It doesn't really make any difference. I'm thinking about getting us to play bet-. ter." Of seeing l'home homer against him for the first time, Bell said, "Jimmy is such a special kid. He's a hard worker and a good friend. But he did it all on his own." "Buddy and I are very close," Thome said.

"I think he's perfect for that job. He can take guys and jnake them good players. I know because he got me through some tough times. I'm sure he can do what he needs to do to get that team back on track." To complete a night full of emotions, Bell sat in his office and watched one of his favorites from the 1994-95 Indians, Paul Sorrento, make the final out of Yankee Dwight Gooden's no-hitter against Seattle. NOTEBOOK: In his Detroit debut, center-fielder Duane Singleton drove in the Tigers' run by pulling a fifth-inning single past first base.

"I hit something off-speed," he said. "It dove at the last minute." Singleton didn't have an RBI in his previous 31 big league at-bats with Milwaukee. Tuesday night's game was the Tigers' 40th of the season; they were trying for back-to-back victories for the first time since the 12th and 13th games. Third baseman Travis Fryman made a sensational play to allow catcher John Flaherty to throw out Lofton, the majors' leader in steals. When Lofton tried to swipe third in the seventh, Fryman took Flaherty's accurate throw on the run and tagged Lofton just before he got to the bag.

"A great play, and a great throw by John," Bell said. Here's a tough way to have your average drop below .200: In the sixth, Cecil Fielder stroked what would have been a single up the middle against a normal infield alignment.
