-Goo. W. Funk. UTILIZING THE OCEAN WAVES. Water Pumps Operated by Old Neptune's Foren on the Jersey Coast.

Now that some enterprising genins has proposed to press into survice 'the wave power of the Bosphorus for lighting the Turkish capital it might not be amiss to call to mind at leastone or two of several More modest schemes of wave power utilization that have nctually been called into effect. and that hure practically demonstrated wAve motors to possess elements of decided value and usefulness. One of these schemes, as materialized nt one of the summer resorts along the New Jersey consisted in the use of a thick wooden blade, strangly built, abont live feet wide amt eight Sent long, which WAS hung from nt its upper corners, between two piles of the dock, and WitS free to be swung to and fro by the waves. Projecting frow the upper edge was so connected as to operate a pump which raised water to tank, which it was delivered to carts for street sprinkling. The contrivance.

it. will be understood. depended for its action upon the progressive action of the wares. which swung the pivoted the blade. Crude us this apparatus was, it appeared to give quite satisfactory results, and led to the use, a short time later, of second motor of the same general class, though essentially different in naLtner of operation.

depending. as it. dil, upon the rise snot fall of Lout acted upon by the waves, and upon tire toand-iro motion of a hinged vane. A timber frame was pivoted at one end between the piles of a dock, and at the other end carried a. dost, which.

of course. was free to rise and fall with the waves. A wire rope extonding from the font passed over two sheaves and enrried 3 weight at its other end. Attached to this rope was a second one, which passed over still another sheave to the plunger of a pump, the water from which was delivered to an overlicad tank. The float weighed abont two thousand five hundred pounds and the counterweight two thousand pounds.

As the float rose on a wave this counweight descended and lifted the pump plunger, which performed the return stroke by its own weight the connter weight being lifted by the falling float. Allowance could he made for the rise and full of the tide by changing the length of the rope leading from the counterweight to the pump plunger, and provision was also made for lifting the float cutirely ont of the water when the waves were running unusually high. The pump used had a sixinch bore and a six -fool stroke, and ordinarily filled the twelve thousand galIon tank in about seren hours. --Cassell's Magazine. JUST IN TIME.

Lind we been obliged to run. or rather to try to rne, over soft snow, escape would have been impossible. As it was, we were only just in time.
