For years, he still wore the red robe with the hole in it. "That showed how he lived in his art more than anything," his friend, Glen Mannisto, said Tuesday.

"There were no boundaries between his life and art." as part of the Cass Corridor school. Using recycled material and abstract imagery, the group forged an urban identity. In 1980, its work was celebrated in a Detroit Institute of Arts exhibit. Mr. Schwarz's early work was almost mathematical, with sharply defined shapes and colors.

But in 1985, he changed direction and created dioramas. "I started doing this because I wanted to stop making art altogether," he said in 1985. "I was tired of making abstract art. 1 wanted to be accessible without any pretense, like divesting yourself of everything ex Paul Schwarz door plumbing or a stove. Mr. Schwarz developed his style during the late 1960s and early 70s Tammy Wynette Reuters NASHVILLE, Tenn. The nation Tuesday mourned Tammy Wynette, who rose from picking cotton to become a country music star, her piercing voice and poignant lyrics echoing the triumphant and tragic-twists to her life. Ms. Wynette, 55, died Monday from a blood clot in her lungs, and tributes poured in Tuesday from peers and President Bill Clinton and first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The president issued a statement saying he and the first lady were saddened. He said she "defined the Nashville sound that helped to make American country western music popular all over the world." Loretta Lynn called her "my best girlfriend in country music." Ms. Wynette personified the rags-to-riches determination of many of the older country music stars such as Lynn and her former husband and collaborator, George Jones. As a teen, she married construction worker Euple Byrd, started a family at 18 and survived in a three- Irving Keren Dentist, inventor, craftsman Irving Kersh, 91, a dentist and craftsman who would cast dental work himself rather than send it to a lab, died Monday of a stroke at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. Her first song, "Apartment Number 9," became a hit in 1966 and she achieved stardom in 1968 with "Stand By Your Man." But Ms. Wynette's rendition of "Stand By Your Man" later pointed to a sadder, self-mocking interpretation. By 1970, she had recorded a number of popular songs that commented obliquely on changing social mores, such as "D-I-V-O-R-C-E" and "Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad." a daughter, Marilyn Schwartz; three grandchildren, and a sister. Mr.

White was recommended to the Mills Brothers by Louis Armstrong and played with the band for several years while the group's regular guitarist was serving in the military. He also appeared on seven "soundies" juke box videos that the band filmed in the 1940s. In the 1950s, he was asked to transcribe Sam Cooke's song "You Send Me," which went on to become a best-selling hit. He appeared on all of Cooke's recordings, leading the singer's band until Cooke's death in 1964. In 1995, Mr.

While and David Tenenbaum wrote the book "You Send Me: The Life and Times of Sam Cooke." He patented several of his ideas, including a pants hanger, a paper holder for packs of soda and a nail clipper guard so one wouldn't dig too deeply underneath one's nails. Mr. Kersh practiced dentistry at a Hamtramck office before moving his practice to Warren in 1950. After retiring in 1983, his wife started Metro Publications.

They both ran the company and retired in 1991 after handing over the business to their son David. Born in Detroit to Russian immigrants, Mr. Kersh put himself through dental school during the Depression by working in a butcher shop. In addition to his son, survivors include his wife, Belle; son, Richard; Associated Press Wendy O. She was 48. Her ex-manager and longtime companion Rod Swenson said he found her body Monday near their home in Storrs, where they moved in 1991. The stale medical examiner said Ms. Williams died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Swenson said she had been despondent for some time.

Ms. Williams had a trademark Mohawk haircut and was nominated in 1985 for a Grammy in the best Female Rock Vocal category during the height of the band's popularity.
