The PBS documentary, an unflinching examina- tion of men who hate gays enough pursued a closeted gay lifestyle until, in self-disgust, he killed two men, believing it would put an end to his homosexuality.

Among the others profiled, some say childhood sexual abuse ignited a hatred of gays. Others contend they were warding off unwanted advances or consider homosexuals easy prey for robbery or thrill crimes. An Army sergeant was angered over President Clinton's support for gays in the military. When he opened fire on a restaurant in 1993, an elderly couple, Ethel and Pete Parrous, were among those slain. Released in cinemas last year in a longer, award-winning version, "Licensed to Kill" begins and ends with telephone messages left at the offices of gay and lesbian rights groups. "I think we should have a gay-bashing day to bash all you (expletive) queers, because if AIDS doesn't get you, we will," a voice says in one recorded call. Those chilling words are a reminder, Dong says.

"We see the convictions of these seven men, see they are incarcerated, and that gives us, on one level, relief that they are behind bars. However, at the same time, you hear these anonymous messages and know the battle isn't over." "jo- if" pictures of the dead. But equally disturbing is the implication that the film and the crimes it details may be received coolly and without compassion by some. Whatever led the seven men profiled to violence, "Licensed to Kill" suggests they had a coconspirator: a society that, in some quarters, fosters disdain for homosexuals. The documentary, despite its dramatic title, takes an evenhanded approach that does not insist on a single interpretation just as Dong intended.

"I didn't produce this film to give answers," he says. "I produced it to probe and provoke. For me, thinking about this issue wasn't simple. It was very difficult and very complicated." The film offers context, including biblical references and remarks from public figures on homosexuality. But "Licensed to Kill" focuses on the attackers as they recount and reflect on their crimes.

"I wouldn't lose no sleep over it," Arkansas prison inmate Jeffrey Swin-ford says of the murder he committed. "I don't want to sound like it wasn't no big deal, but one less problem the world had to mess with."
