Pilch graduated from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor with an engineering degree in the 1940s and was ready for a career in the auto industry. Earl Meggerson Autoworker, jazz lover Earl Meggerson, 74, a retired Ford Motor Co. worker who loved jazz and traditional manners, died April 30 of complications from bone cancer at St. Mary Hospital in Livonia. Mr. Meggerson of Detroit worked for 30 years at the Ford Motor Co.

Cheryl Strausbaugh Saved her son Cheryl Strausbaugh, 43, a caring mother who saved her 14-year-old son from a fire in their Southfield home, died Sunday of burns and smoke inhalation from the same fire. Her last words, relatives said, were "Billy, Billy, get out of the' house!" "Her last words saved his life," said her sister Georgee Jarvis. "Her kids were the most important thing in her life." Raised in Detroit, Miss Strausbaugh attended Redford High School and later earned her GED. She worked as a cashier at Kmart and other stores before becoming a homemaker.

During World War II, he served in the Army as a military intelligence officer, specializing in the translation of Portuguese with the Brazilian expeditionary force in Italy. A devoted family man, he helped take care of his wife, Nellie Lu Rice, who contracted polio in 1952. She died last year on May 4, exactly one year before his death.

Survivors include three daughters, Diane Tihansky, Kathleen Bowers and Rita Ruby; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; five sisters, and three brothers.
