This is just the latest and perhaps the best slice of soap operatic counter-programming that NBC has sent out to do battle with big sporting events like the World Series and NCAA basketball. Pop novelist Steel has become the real deal for NBC, racking up strong ratings with TV movie versions of such books as "Daddy," "Palomino," "Fine Things" and "Kaleidoscope." But "Secrets" is a cut above the rest a solid potboiler that has been stylishly produced. You got it: Some intelligent trash with real flash.

Sunday nights because of its 10 p.m. newscast. The good news? Despite the erratic writing, Brinkman-Gilbert and O'Donnell are funny together. There's a likable, over-the-top comic zing to their performances. So don't kiss off "Stand By Your Man" just yet.

With a bit of positive comic chemistry, there's always hope. Two stars.
