So says Dr. William Anderson, the bankruptcy-court appointed trustee in charge of Southwest, the only black-controlled hospital in metro Detroit. Anderson has asked that the 216- maintenance organization with offices on the hospital's fourth floor, would also have to find a new home, Anderson said. Southwest opened heavily in debt in 1970 and has lost money in all but two years of its existence.

Southwest voluntarily declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August, citing $29 million in liabilities and $14.8 million in assets. The hospital has lost at least $28 million during the past six years. bed hospital near Tiger Stadium be turned over to the federal government on May 4, along with all medical records the hospital contains. The request is subject to approval by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes.

"We have no money," said Anderson. "There are absolutely no funds available to maintain the building." Several individuals and groups have mquired about buying Southwest, but there have been no takers, according to court documents. Totally closing the hospital building would displace an outpatient clinic and pharmacy that operate within South-west's building. market, leaving dealers and owners in the lurch. Yugo America Inc. told dealers in a letter last week that the compact car was a victim of civil strife in its European homeland. The company, a unit of Yugoslavian automaker Zavodi Crvena Zastava, filed a Chapter 7 bankruptcy petition in Newark, last week, seeking to liquidate its assets. "Yugo America is done unless the factory decides it could find a new distributor," said company attorney Bruce Buechler.

Ray Potts, service manager of Ken Smith Lincoln Mercury-Yugo-Peugeot in Ridgewood, said that shortly after he received the letter announcing Yugo's U.S. withdrawal, he went to Yugo America headquarters in nearby Saddle River and found it empty and locked. "It was very fast," Potts said. "They're gone. This has been a nightmare." Potts said Yugo America informed dealers late last week that Zastava had made the decision to retreat.

"The manufacturer based its decision primarily on uncertainties in Yugoslavia which have made it impossible to provide Yugo America Inc. with a regular and dependable supply of vehi Italian carmaker Fiat SpA, was first sold in the United States in 1985 for less than $4,000. But many drivers were turned off by the car's initial poor quality and reliability record, dealers said. Yugo's first-quarter 1992 sales of 1,412 cars were up 86 percent over 1991 levels, but dealers speculated the company was merely selling out its inventory by cutting prices. Yugo sold 48,812 units in 1987, its peak year.

The Yugoslavian company follows several other foreign manufacturers that have pulled their cars off the U.S. market in recent years, including France's Renault SA and Peugeot SA, Japan's Daihatsu Motor Co. Ltd and Britain's Sterling, marketed by Land Rover, a unit of British Aerospace Pic. cles and necessary financial support," the company said in the letter. Yugo America added that it was "presently investigating the possibility of continuing to supply spare parts for Yugo vehicles in the U.S." Michael Nardo, general manager of Dave Miller Oldsmobile-Isuzu-Yugo in Matteson, 111., said Yugo never recovered from its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in 1989, even though it emerged as a reorganized company.

"After the first time they went out, they couldn't dig out their reputation again. They were running a defunct corporation," Nardo said. "Sometimes they had a commitment; sometimes they didn't. They were wishy-washy." Those who did included a Mexican prisoner and an Eskimo boy. The brew first made its way abroad when six casks were shipped to England in 1769. Seamen quickly found that the beer's strength ensured it survived long ocean voyages.

Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson took Guinness with him to Western Samoa in the 1890s. By that time it was consumed regularly by traders on the west and east coasts of Africa. Early this century an Australian explorer took Guinness to the South Pole where he left some bottles behind. Found intact 18 years later by another expedition, they were put to good use. Naturally Guinness followed the Irish exodus to Australia and the United States after the great famine last century.

The beverage has been revered in Irish literature. J.P Donleavy, author of that Dublin classic "the Ginger Man," has a bizarre final request: "When I die, I want to decompose in a barrel of porter and have it served in all the pubs of 9.94 10.25 9.94 NL 8.13 8.54 11.79 12.38 11.04 11.59 1201 12.61 16.21 17.09 BY PETER MILLERSHIP Reuter DUBLIN, Ireland Asian women have been known to bathe newborn babies in it, writers are inspired by it and 7 million glasses of it are consumed around the world every day. Guinness stout beer, now into its third century, is one of Ireland's great national treasures and is sold to more than 120 countries from Iceland to Djibouti. "We're still trying to get the world to drink more Guinness," said Leonie Brennan at the St. James's Gate brewery, which has produced the "black gold" since the 1770s.

The ancient recipe of malted barley for a dark color, yeast for a creamy head and hops for a tangy taste has never changed. Brennan corrected one of many myths about Guinness. It is not brewed with the waters of Dublin's River Lif-fey but from supplies in the Wicklow Hills. She said the slogan "Guinness Is Good For You" was not a subtle advertising ploy but the reply most Irish gave when asked in the 1920s why they drank "a pint of plain," as it is known. Guinness has always been considered a tonic when supped modestly and was once given out free by British health authorities to pregnant women.

A cavalry officer recovering from wounds at the battle of Waterloo in 1815 sank a glass of Guinness. "I am confident this contributed more than anything else to my recovery," he wrote. "The best remedy that I know for overexertion in a hot climate consists simply of drinking a bottle of Guinness before doing anything else," said naturalist T.W. Hinchcliff while exploring the jungles of Brazil. "The cure is instantaneous." Despite its place in Irish culture, the Guinness recipe has its origins in England.

It fell under the dark beer term of "porter," named after the London porters at Billingsgate and Covent Garden markets who drank it to lighten their daily load. Now Guinness is to Ireland what Coca-Cola is to America. When Arthur Guinness brewed his first pint, beer was almost unknown in rural Ireland, where whiskey, gin and illicitly distilled poteen liquor were readily available. It caught on swiftly and now has cult 11.44 NL .03 .03 J3 .20 GNMA Govln Highlr LldGv LTG Munlnr NJHYr NYHYr PAHYr ShIMu 20.99 2227-13 53 14.20 31.52-15.51 16.36-33.71 35.77 -17 40 1146 14.30-22.27 23.63-14.13 14 83 1408 14 43 1126-23M 25 1301 18.46 1980- 11.47 12.04 15.51-14.61 15.34- DtmensionalFds: Amcpp AMullp Bondp CaplBp CanWp Eupacp Fdlnvp Govlp Gwthp HITrp Incop InlBdp ICAp NEcop NPerp SmCpp TxExp TECAp TEMdp TEVAp Wshp AGthFd 12.4 10.48 NL NL NL -97! Pouring and handling Guinness is a vital skill for any Irish bartender.

As the glass must be filled a little at a time, it can take five minutes before a pint is ready. The brewery takes pouring so seriously that "Guinness doctors" have been sent all over the world to teach the gentle art of pouring a pint to aid its global sales drive. Guinness, whose Dublin brewery was once the world's largest, dominates the international stout market. Its advertising has changed tack to keep pace with the times. Another approach: Invest in companies you want to change and organize shareholder resolutions. The Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility, a coalition of religious groups and other organizations, this year has sponsored more than 70 such resolutions urging companies to eliminate ozone-depleting chemicals, improve automotive fuel efficiency, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, oppose food irradiation, or simply disclose certain actions. "People who are looking ahead five or 10 years are going to be rewarded by avoiding companies with environmental problems," says Peter Kinder, whose Boston money management firm consults on socially responsible investing. "Companies that are trying to avoid environmental problems are usually run by far-sighted, prudent business people." Norman Fosback, editor of the investment advisory letter Market Logic in Ft. Lauderdale, says funds that screen for the environment and other social factors have been "dramatic underperformers." He studied the results of three social-conscience mutual funds Calvert Social Managed Growth, Dreyfus Third Century and Pax World and found each had outperformed the Standard Poor's 500 in only two of the last eight years.

"I feel investors should go for the highest possible returns, then donate all the excess profits they want to causes they think are socially responsible," Fosback says. However the average mutual fund has beaten the 500 only once in the same eight-year period, according to Morningstar Mutual Funds, a Chicago company that tracks fund performance. Japanese consulate to open in Detroit CONSULATE, from Page 4B staff initially. Among the sites being considered is One Detroit Center, the skyscraper built by developer Gerald Hines with Japanese financial backing. The consulate would provide Japanese government access to the estimated 6,400 Japanese in Michigan and 5,500 in Ohio, as well as the more than 500 Japanese businesses operating in the two states.

There are 292 Japanese companies in Michigan, employing 27,000 Americans, and 235 Japanese businesses in Ohio, employing 45,000 Americans, according to the consulate in Chicago.
