The poll showed that 54 percent of the people surveyed opposed the waiting period bill and pictures. Sen. Robert Keough, 36, of Howell, ByJacquelynn Boyle Ftet Press Lansing Staff LANSING Prodded by Right to Life of Michigan, state senators Wednesday rejected the House version of a 24-hour waiting period for women seeking abortions which lacked a requirement that they view pictures of developing fetuses.

The move sent the bill to a House-Senate committee, where Right to Life is expected to push to have the pictures provision put back in. "We would like to see some kind of fetal development information in the hill," said Edward Rivet, legislative director for the state's leading group of abortion opponents. "We're very pleased with this." The 25-12 vote came after several senators took swipes at Right to Life. Sen. John Schwarz said the House version provides enough information for women to make informed decisions on abortion and "is a very satisfactory bill for people like myself who are pro-life." Schwarz is a physician.

Lawmakers who don't support it are "caving in to a special interest group that's got 95 percent of what they want, yet they won't negotiate and they won't talk about taking anything but 100 percent," said Schwarz, R-Battle Creek. Dad, friend get 50 years for abusing 5-year-old PONTIAC Two Clarkston men were sentenced Wednesday to up to 50 years in prison for forcing the 5-year-old son of one of the men to smoke a cigarette, drink gin and perform oral sex on them. Judge Robert Anderson's sentences of David Lewis Simpson III and Paul Matthew Salvino exceeded judicial guidelines but were in line with recommendations by the probation department.

"It's hard for me to understand what goes through an adult's mind to do this to a child, let alone the father of a child," said Anderson. Simpson, 24, got 25 to 50 years for criminal sexual conduct and three concurrent terms of 10-15 years on other counts of child abuse. Salvino, also 24, got 25 to 50 years for aiding and abetting criminal sexual conduct and two concurrent terms of 10-15 years on other abuse charges. The boy is staying in a foster home while the probate court determines whether he will be returned to his mother. Born in Zion, 111., the former Harriet Barton graduated from Stephens College and Michigan State University.

His analysis of the interrogation of witnesses by the House Un-American Activities Committee was instrumental in the dissolution of the committee. A fervent opponent of capital punishment, he demonstrated that it discriminates against minority groups. And his work, in association with Professor Harry Kalven was the basis for legal changes throughout the country. Jerome M.
