2C DETROIT FREE PRESSFRIDAY, JULY 28, 1969 Film Scoreboard ItATHY llUFFHI'iES' SlIAPPED SliOTS An offbeat look at offbeat movies Movies are rated 1-10 (Subpar to above average). Unless otherwise noted, Huffliines did the reviews. For times, see the movie guide on this page. lOPEMNG TODAY Babar: The Movie OKI I'm not going to ask I you again. Which one of jjjly you guys siolt tmy i i i fMlJ i If iSI'llr li 1 1 1 '1 1 i um It doesn't trash the charming French elephant, but neither vnon 5 whose quicksilver inventiveness sparks seven students to "Seize the day! Make your lives extraordinary!" Melodramatic cliches are also in the picture, but they don't spoil the subtle blend of comedy and seriousness, the wonderful ensemble acting or the touching ending.

Rated PG; mild profanity. Do The Right Thing 9 Spike Lee's Bedford-Stuyvesant blockful of vivid, bristling, innovative African-American characters, colors and rhythms explodes in a carefully constructed, complicated, incendiary double ending pitting the philosophy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. against the philosophy of Malcolm X. Rated explicit profanity, nudity, arson, violence.

(Reviewed by Huffliines and Robin D. Givhan.) does it live up to the books about Pet Sematary 5 Not as bad as "Cujo" and "Fire-starter," this Stephen King tale of a dad whose cat, son and wife return from the dead is nowhere near as good as "Carrie" or "The Shining." Rated gore, animal killing, zombies. (Reviewed by Carr.) Peter Pan 7 The 1953 Walt Disney full-length animated cartoon is back to delight another generation of children, who will find it action-packed and fun to watch. There are clever visual touches, a couple of good songs Can Fly," "The Second Star to the and having a young man (Bobby Driscoll) provide Peter's voice seems downright revolutionary and very right. Rated G.

Nothing objectionable. Scenes From The Class Struggle In Beverly Hills 5 Ten denizens of Beverly Hills play multiple bedrooms in director Paul Barters shallow, brittle updating of Jean Renoir's "Rules of the Game." A sex comedy that isn't sexy or funny, it does have several outrageous scenes and plenty of irony. Rated nudity, sex Star Trek The Final Frontier 5K A good sci-fi fable typical of the old TV series, the story of a renegade Vulcan insisting that; everyone face pain in order to see a vision of God at the center of the universe, is hampered by digressions and forced humor. Director William Shatner should give the problems of i ensemble acting and dramatic momen- turn back to the guy with the pointy ears. Rated PG; mild profanity, sci-fi violence.

UHF 1 7 Weird Al Yankovic takes oveig high frequency station and parg dies bad television, pop television, bizarre television and movies like "Conan the Barbarian" in a disjointed, tacky, funny summer sleeper. Rated PG-13; profanity, some sadistic humor) Voices Of Sarafinai 9 Director Nigel Noble's film about the two dozen young South Africans in the cast of the New York hit musical "Sarafina!" is one of the rare documentaries of a stage production more powerful than the production itself. Ends with Miriam Makeba's backstage visit, the most moving 20 minutes of film you'll see this year. Unrated; nothing objectionable. At the Tele-Arts Theatre.

When Harry Met 6 Attempting a fresh, honest, comic look at relationships in the '80s, writer-director Rob ReS ner's personal script meets Billy Crysv; tal's impersonal salmon-in-aspic Harrj for a movie that can't make it on Meg Ryan's mildly appealing Sally. Not full-bodied Reiner or Crystal, it's more lika diluted Woody Allen. Rated profanP ty, sexual situations. Friday The 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan After offing almost 100 teens at Crystal Lake in his first seven outings, Jason meets his match when he takes on Manhattan. Rated no advance screening.

Rated nothing objectionable. (Reviewed by Robert Garrett, Boston Globe.) Turner And Hooch 5 Yuppie police investigator Tom Hanks teams with a plug-ugly, slobbering, barfly mastiff to bust 'criminals. A kind of "Odd Couple" with fleas, it's better than "K9," but not much. Rated PG; profanity, gross dog drool. Friday The 13th, Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan 0 Having run out of camp counselors to decapitate, Jason attempts to carve up the Big Apple in the eighth installment of the series that Will not die.

Make no bones about it, this is the worst of the bunch. Even fans of the "Friday the 13th" movies will be disappointed. Extremely un-9rary and even more boring. Rated partial nudity, drug use, obscene language, violence. (Reviewed by Mike Dembs, Free Press Special Writer.) Now showing Batman 8 If you're looking for action or drama, you'll think it's a 6.

If you're looking for Michael Kea-pn and Jack Nicholson's dueling noir psycho-twins in a fantastic "Metropolis Runner" setting, you may think it's a 10. Whatever you're looking for, director Tim Burton's screen vision is one of the few Summer movies to leave lasting memories. Rated PG-13; profanity, bizarre humor, disfigurement. ClIOCOLAT unuii scenes. At the Maple III.

Shag 6 Page Hannah, Bridget Fonda, Phoebe Cates and Annabeth Gish are 1963 South Carolina girls in this combination of "Mystic Pizza" and "Where the Boys Are." It's better than "Karate Kid III" (what isn't') but not as good as either of its models. Rated PG; profanity, sexual situations. Field Of Dreams 8 Kevin Costner's charismatically sincere Iowa farmer hears a voice that tells him to build a baseball stadium in his cornfield, then follow dreams involving writer James Earl Jones and total good guy Burt Lancaster. Sometimes overly literary but truly magical in its way of turning simple things into an American fable. Rated PG; mild profanity.

Ghostbusters II 6 The ecto-containment crew returns in a flatter clone of the original. Despite occasionally amusing scenes with other cast members and various Full Floating Vapors, it boils down to: "Ghostbusters had Bill Murray and green goo; "II" has Bill Murray and red goo. Rated PG; profanity, ecto-violence. The one must-see film event of the summer.

Rated PG; army violence; OK for all but very young kids. Lethal Weapon II Honey, I Shrunk The Kids 4 Rick Moranis gets top billing but the real stars of this science-experiment-gone-awry flick are the giant props, from a colossal broom and dustpan to blades of grass the size of trees, all of which confront four shrunken, but valiant, youngsters trying to get home across the backyard. Rated PG; nothing objectionable but giant insects may upset small children. (Reviewed by Martin F. Kohn.) 5.

Or you can catch him as Indiana Jones in this roller coaster that speeds though castles, zeppelins, Nazi battalions and rat-infested catacombs. Sean Connery plays his mischievous dad in a film that's better than "Temple of Doom" but not as good as "Raiders." Rated PG-13; profanity, comic book violence, no hearts ripped from bodies.

The Karate Kid Part III 5 When the kid decides to defend his championship title, he's forced to choose whether to use 2. Batman (PG13) Screens Gross: $1 1 .2 million Emotionally, technically and es- 9 6 Mel Gibson and Danny Glover continue the tale of crazy cop and cautious cop when they tangle with South African bad guys hiding behind diplomatic immunity. The characters are intriguing but the story falls flat. Rated violence, profanity and nudity. (Reviewed by Givhan.) Licence To Kill 6 More action, less Bond as Timothy Dalton's 007 meets "Miami Vice" on the trail of a drug lord.

Rated PG-13; profanity, violence, man exploded in pressure tank. The Navigator 5 A boy from medieval England digs a hole through the center of the earth and emerges in modern-day Auckland in this New Zealand fantasy film that has moments of great cinematography but doesn't hold together as a story. The movie's comic, posturing, mish-mashed script and direction give the best chance to the excellent Winona Ryder as Lewis' 13-year-old cousin-bride and to Lewis' own newly-recorded sound track of old hits. Rated PG-13; profanity, clothed sex scene. High Hopes 9 Ruth Sheen and Philip Davis are film's funniest, most endearing, most unsentimentalized '60s survivors yet as they contend with amusingly awful upper-class and now veau riche couples. Unrated; profanity, sexual situations.
