The win enabled the Bulldogs to wind up with a 17-6 record, one of the winningest campaigns in Algona history. Coach Keith Christie is to be congratulated on the turn-about of Algona baseball fortunes during his six years as head coach. He stepped into the position of coaching a losing team in a community where high school baseball seemed to be dying out. In his first three years he brought Bulldog teams up to near .500 seasons. But in the last three he has directed his boys to marks of 13-5, 17-4, and 17-6. Largely due to his efforts and those by coaches such as Pat Daugherty of Garrigan, summer high school baseball in Algona has grown in popularity where it once had mere existence. ONE HITTER Craig Espe worked on the mound for Algona, hurling another one-hitter to even his season mark at 6-6. Espe probably deserves a much better win-loss fate, however, as several of his losses were close decisions. He also was forced into frequent and demanding starting jobs when Steve Hardy sat out for three weeks with an injury. Espe will have two more seasons in which to collect the wins he deserves. Dan Gilmore, senior catcher from Whittemore, led the Bulldog attack at the plate, belting out two singles and a home run. Gilmore enjoyed himself in center field in this contest after having tried shortstop last week in Algona's 10-7 win over Burt, Dave Martin took Gilmore's place behind the plate and rapped a double. BUI Farnham went 2 for 2 for the second straight game and Dale Teeter also helped the cause with a single and a three-run double. Algona scored two in the second and third innings, erupted for nine in the fourth, and finished up with four behind Gilmore's four-sacker in the fifth. The game was then called because of the 10-run rule and threatening skies. Burt's lone hit was a double by Ortman in the fourth.
