Some concerts have been right on the mark, loaded with finesse and perceptive music-making.

Others have seriously misfired, bringing mayhem in their wake. And some have gone off like a child's pop-gun, entirely missing the artistic bull's-eye. Thursday night's concert was of the pop-gun variety. It ended with Tchaikovsky 's 1 8 1 2 Overture" (hence these firearms imagesX but guest conductor Daniel Nazareth led such a square, unimaginative performance that the cannon shots (done to perfection by cannoneer Paul Barnett, whose virtuosity puts Quaker Oats to shame) seemed more artistic than the rest of the instruments. This 1812 went "buh-duh-Buh-Duh-Buh-Duh-Buh-Duh-BUH-BUH-BUH And it went "BUH (two, three, four) BUH (two) BUH (four) BUH (two, three) buh-BUH (two, three, four) And it went In other words, the notes and shots were all in place, but the performance never struck home with the force this riotous essay in musical kitsch should produce.

THE INDIAN-BORN Nazareth, who is music director of the West Berlin Symphony, is one of those young conductors he looks to be in his early 30s who memorize all their scores but never get beyond the notes. He was never inaccurate, but he was also never very interesting. He preceded the 1812 with the suite Stravinsky put together in 1945 of music from his "Firebird" ballet. It is the least interesting of the three suites Stravinsky arranged from the full score, primarily because it incorporates some dull ballet fodder the other a e7 words with In show business for less than five years, Barr, 33, has made an unexpected career out of wisecracks she developed about life as a mother and homemaker while waitressing at a Denver comedy club. John Gulnn classics suites leave out. But it also has most of the high points, including the lyrical "Dance of the Princesses," the vibrant "Infernal Dance of King Kashchei" (whose shattering opening chord almost always, as it did Thursday night, catches most of the audience unaware) and the brassy apotheosis that closes the ballet.

These are gorgeous portions that can glow with special brilliance in the hands of a gifted conductor. But Nazareth simply led his forces through the notes, with no Indication that he had tried to infuse his personality into the music. THE PROGRAM opened with DSO concertmaster Gordon Staples' cautious performance of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto. The performance as a whole could not be called successful there were too many dropped notes for that. But there were individual moments that were satisfying, among them the warm color Staples brought to his tone quality in the opening movement's secondary theme and the fiery way he shot off some of the passages in the finale, which of the three movements came off best.

Nazareth's orchestral accompaniment was unusually sympathetic to Staples' cautious approach. Pianist Jose Feghali will perform Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto in place of the violin concerto Sunday at 8 p.m.; otherwise the program remains the same. ROSANNE BARR Of the new ones, in one I'm the coach of a team; in another, I'm eating pizza in bed." ON SUCCESS: "We have more money now, which is great. We can buy stuff we like. We don't have Visa and Master Charge after us anymore.

I still buy1 clothes off the rack, but I've found a really good store now for large-size clothes that don't make me look like the couch. ON HER STYLE OF HUMOR: "Some women reporters ask me, 'Why do you do self-deprecating That makes me mad. It's not self-deprecating. Like, how come when Woody Allen and Rodney Dangerfield do it, it's just funny? No one calls them self-deprecating." ON HER FAVORITE COMEDIANS: "Rodney Dangerfield is the best stand-up comic that ever lived. I feel so honored because I'm going to play his wife on an HBO special.
