But he can't for a combination of reasons Lemon's defensive skills, his base-path intensity, his leadership and his ability to get on base. And the Tigers are on the West Coast for 12 games, especially important because Toronto (6-1 since the All-Star break) and Baltimore (5-2) are rolling. The Tigers are 6-1 since the break.

"Chet Lemon is the best defensive center fielder I've been around," Anderson says. "He has played as good for us as anyone. I'd like to rest him but I can't afford to." When he managed the Reds, Anderson had one of the National League's best defensive center fielders, Cesar Geronimo. That may be down the road for Lemon.

Wednesday night he doubled in four trips as the Tigers completed a sweep of the Angels. He's batting .252 with 11 homers and 30 RBIs. But Anderson is pleased more with his defense, and compares him favorably to others around the league. "Rick Manning of Milwaukee, Dwayne Murphy of Oakland and Chet are the three best defensive center fielders in the American League," Anderson says. "I know the people of Milwaukee and Oakland will argue that they have the best.

But I'm telling you, I got the best right here. I wouldn't trade Chet for any center fielder in the league." 10:00 a.m. British Open hourly updates throughout the day. Saturday 11:00 a.m. British Open, hourly updates throughout the day, TIGERS, from Page 5D Seattle had another chance to score in the third inning when John Moses tripled with one out. Morris disappointed them, though, by striking out the next two men.

TIGERS THIRD base coach Alex Grammas got In a gambling mood in the fourth, and the Tigers failed to score in spite of three consecutive hits to the outfield a double and two singles. Leach doubled, and Grammas waved him home on Chet Lemon's hit to center. He was out easily on Moses' throw. Then Lemon, who had taken second on the play, was out by 20 feet on right fielder Dave Henderson's throw to the plate following Wayne Krenchicki's single. Abbott was kayoed the next inning, which Trammell began with a two-base shot off the wall.

The Tiger shortstop advanced on an infield out and scored on Kirk Gibson's single, which brought Bob Stoddard to the mound. He closed off the rally, but was charged with the Tigers' fourth run in the seventh when Whitaker greeted reliever Ed Vande-Berg with an RBI single. The win was the Tigers' fifth in six games with the Mariners this year. TAGGING THE TIGERS: It was understandable if the Tigers and Mariners had jet lag Thursday night. Both teams made crosscountry flights to reach Seattle early Thursday morning, the Tigers traveling from Detroit and the Mariners from Boston.

The American League forced the exhausting journey by neglecting to. allow an open date for travel, and then permitting the Red Sox and Tigers to schedule night games Wednesday. The Tigers' trip would have been rough enough if everything went smoothly. It didn't. The equipment truck from Tiger Stadium broke down Wednesday night, causing a long delay.

Tigers vs. Seattle, July 26, 7:30 p.m., Tiger SPORTS ON THE AIR, from Page 1D Given the power of ABC's $20 million, two-year contract, look for the kickoff to be about 8:12 p.m. THE ANNOUNCERS will be ABC's team of Keith Jackson for play-by-play, and Lynn Swann as analyst. Tim Brant will be on the sidelines and Mike Barry a former sportscaster at Detroit's Channel 4 will conduct post-game Interviews in the locker room. Last Saturday's Chicago-Philadelphia playoff game attracted a 5.0 national rating.

The Sunday game between the Panthers and Oakland drew a 5.9 rating nationally, and a 17.3 in Detroit. Last summer, on the same Sunday in July, the World Cup final soccer match between Italy and West Germany drew a 6.6 national rating. "Not bad," ABC spokesman Irv Brodsky said, when asked about the USFL playoff ratings, which were lower than average NFL ratings. "We beat the competition on the other networks." (The closest rating to the USFL games was NBC's Sunday "Sportsworld," which drew a 5.1 national rating for a show that Included a Thomas Hearns fight.) telecast (Chicago at Birmingham on June 1 7) drew a dismal rating of 4.8, the lowest-rated telecast of the week and the second-worst rating of the entire television season. Great Nuclear Arms Debate" was last.) However, ABC's overall USFL schedule drew a 6.0 average rating, better than the network's 5.0 break-even figure.

ABC has pledged to cover the league again next season. But will the network use its option for 1985 and 1986? "We look for slow and steady growth," Brodsky said. "We did NASL soccer in 1978 and averaged a 2.3 rating. We did it again in 1 979 and it again drew a 2.3 rating. That was the disaster.

We no longer carry it." American Football League games in 1960 averaged a 5.8 rating, Brodsky said, then grew to 6.1 in 1961. "That," he said, "was a success." ALTHOUGH SUNDAY'S game will be carried nationally on the ABC radio network with former Detroit sportscaster Fred Man-fra on the the national broadcast won't be heard locally. Instead, it will be carried by WXYZ (1270-AM), the local ABC station, which carried Panther games all season.
