THE TERRE HAUTE STAR, MONDAY, APRIL 17, 1950. LOVE'S PERILOUS PATH A Sequel to "Love's Fair Horizon" BY ADELE GARRISON REALIZING WHAT A TERRIBLE STRAIN MR. 'K' HAS BEEN UNDER, MADGE PERSUADES HIM THAT HE NEEDS SOME REST. Synopsis: In the library of her Sag Harbor farm house, where she is talking to young ride to her father, Charles Spencer, after the latter has just informed him that is "K's sweetheart. Carlotta Carroll, probably spy.

he Madge believes asks she the is a friend grief-stricken to Car- man lotta and to him. answers. "Then. it I promise to waken you before she wakens tomorrow, will you take a sleeping pellet tonight?" Madge continues. "It will take more than one pellet," says, despairingly.

"I've been talking about longing to see Carlotta, when, actually, I'm dreading the interview. Don't you know your father is counting on me to entrap her and prove her guilt?" I had known from Dicky the terrible task my father had given his FBI aid, Mr. that of entrapping Carlotta Carroll and proving her to be a spy against us in the search for the treasure of Transvania which involved such danger to Georges, exiled King of Trees, now in sanctuary at the farm house. But his revelation to me, palpably torn from him by his bewilderment and his terror, that Carlotta were affianced lovers, made it impossible for me to show any knowledge of my father's plan. "Oh!" I exclaimed, and my dismay was not feigned, though my astonishment was, "you must misunderstood him.

He cannot have set you a horrible task like that! Or, doesn't he know that you and Carlotta are betrothed." He Knows "Yes, he knows," the FBI man said wearily. "I made it my business to tell him that, as soon as he began to voice, his suspicions of her. But it made no difference. He reminded me of my oath to my country, and outlined my course most rigidly." With shivers running down my spine I could imagine the implacability of my father, even though it masked poignant sympathy, as he had outlined the course he wished his young aid to pursue. "I talked wildly to you about having her tell me her side of the he went on, "but I knew, even as I was raving, that I could not ask her that.

Your father has set me the most awful task a man ever faced. I am to pretend cence of any doubts against her, and he is going to the same command upon everyone else who comes near her. He says that she is to be permitted to go almost anywhere she wishes, do anything that appears to be her desire, but that I am never to lose sight of her, and that she also is to be trailed by others of the household." Perfectly Awful "How perfectly awful for you," I said banally, for I felt that the situation rapidly was getting beyond me." "I can't face it!" he said. "I'd get out of the world under own power if it weren't for leav-! ing Carlotta defenseless." "I'm glad you thought of that." I said dryly, in an effort to mask the terror which was' creeping through my veins. "I can't quite imagine you taking the coward's way out." "I deserved that," he said after a pause.

"But, don't worry. I've got a job to do, although how I'm going to do it, heaven only knows." I steeled myself for conflict. Needs Rest "All the more reason you should have some rest before you tackle it," I told him firmly. "You will be able to think more clearly after. you get some rest, and I will waken, you at any you say." He waited so long before he answered me that I found myself clenching my fingers Into my palms until I could feel the nails cutting into the flesh.

"What time do you expert Carlotta to waken?" he asked. "About 8 o'clock, Dr. Twitchell said," I told him. "Can the old doc give me pellet which will let me waken at he asked. "Of course," I answered.

"Then." he answered with deep "please get it. There doesn't seem to be anything else that I can do." (Continued Tomorrow) North Carolina researchers have found that, unfortunately, cattle, grazing in timberlands, will eat the most valuable species first.
