State farm Income up 20 EAST LANSING Increased production and higher prices raised net farm income 20 percent during 1980, a Michigan State University economist says. Michigan was favored with excellent crops and some yields were near record levels, the economist, John Ferris, said. The larger 1980 crops and higher prices will mean more income in 1981 as well because nearly half the major crops are not sold until after the first of the year, he said. Higher prices in 1981 are anticipated for hogs, cattle, eggs and milk.

Pere Marquette River survey upheld LUDINGTON A group of landowners armed with a 142-year-old survey and a long list of tax receipts has won the right to keep 2,000 acres in Mason County. The landowners, known as the Pere Marquette River Rights Association, said the federal Bureau of Land Management has decided to honor the old federal survey, even though a new survey turned up several major errors in the first document. According to the U.S. Swamp and Overflow Land Act of 1850, the land improperly surveyed in 1838 would have reverted to the state. However, the property owners argued they had paid taxes on the land between Ludington and Scottville for more than 100 years and the federal agency ruled they EACH A 5 9 OVER 12 VARIETIES OF EI11GI16 1' s-1 .2.

Court orders driving course PONTIAC An Oakland County Circuit judge has ordered the Huron Valley Board of Education in western Oakland County to reinstate a driver's education program it dropped last summer as a budget cut measure. The board had argued in a resident's suit that the Motor Vehicle Code's drivers' education provision violates the Michigan Constitution on a technicality.

But Judge Gene Schnelz ruled against the schools and noted that other school boards in the state have been ordered by courts to keep drivers' education programs. Champagne for Oakland U. PONTIAC Oakland University is free to inaugurate president-designate Joseph Champagne. Oakland Circuit Judge Alice Gilbert, who issued a temporary restraining order Nov. 17 against an inauguration, dissolved it Wednesday after the university said it placed a hardship on Champagne, a vice-president at the University of Houston who has a house to sell.

Attorney General Frank Kelley sought the original order, saying the university had violated Michigan's Open Meetings Act In searching for a new president. University attorney James Howlett said no one has objected to Champagne and, however he was chosen, the choice was validated at an open meeting of the university's board of trustees Dec. 9.
