Nov. 6, Knott, also a convicted prostitute, was working near Eight Mile Road and Schaefer when she solicited Murphy for sex. Murphy paid the woman, grabbed her, used some of her clothing to bind her hands behind her back and began stabbing her. He then dragged her from his car, removed the rest of her clothing and beat her head and chest with his fists. Knott's body was found later that night in bushes adjacent to a home in the 20100 block of Littlefield.

ON FEB. 10, 1967, Murphy was convicted of "carnal knowledge of a female" and sentenced to six months in the Detroit House of Correction and fined $1,000. On July 28, 1969, after being convicted of unarmed bank robbery, he was sentenced to an eight-year prison term at federal prison. Murphy was paroled Oct. 10, 1972.

Convicted the following year of attempted burglary of a business place, he was sentenced to a one-to-five year term in Jackson Prison on Feb. 13, 1 974, and paroled 1 0 months later to the custody of the U.S. Marshall's office. Murphy completed his state prison term May 12, 1976, according to prison records. Arrested earlier this year for carrying a concealed weapon, Murphy was placed on probation April 7 by Recorder's Court Judge Clarice Jobes.

He still was on probation at the time of his arrest, police said. ARREST, from Page 3A an several times and then dumped her on the street. The woman, who was nude and had her hands tied behind her back with her pantyhose, managed to crawl to the porch of a home in the 19000 block of Houghton, where she used her forehead to press the door bell. When no one answered, she went to another house, where she was admitted by a man who called the police. "Based on the description she gave us of Murphy and the car he was driving, we were able to quickly make an arrest," said Hislop, noting that Murphy was taken into police custody shortly after midnight Sunday.

In addition to being charged with attempted murder, three counts of criminal sexual conduct and armed robbery the woman's jewelry and purse were stolen Murphy also was charged with the slayings of Warren and Knott. POLICE GAVE these versions of the slayings: At about 2 a.m. Oct. 23, Warren, a convicted prostitute, was picked up by Murphy, who took her to another location, undressed her, used portions of her clothing to tie her hands behind her back and then dragged her from the car. Using a pick-axe handle, Murphy then beat the victim, stabbed her numerous times in the chest and dumped her body in front of a home in the 19800 block of Prest only blocks from his own home about 4 a.m.
