MEANWHILE, Channel 4 is in a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't situation. It has been tape-delaying the Letterman show a day and showing it at 1 a.m. during the week, after "Entertainment Tonight," the very hot and much improved entertainment and celebrity news magazine.

And as of Sept. 5, Letterman is scheduled to disappear entirely from the WDIV schedule with the arrival of the heavily promoted, syndicated talk show, "Thicke of the Night." "We made the decision for what we think are the best interests of our station," said Jim Corno, Channel 4 program director. "We're making an investment in 'Thicke of the And we think it will be a strong show for years to come. It's the same with 'Entertainment That sort of decision involves bottom line business considerations as much as any notion of programming quality. Channel 4 reaps greater ad revenues from a syndicated show like "Entertainment Tonight" than from network programs, where the commercial minutes must be divvied up with the network.

"These things are not done haphazardly," Corno said. "We understand Letterman has a following." But Corno is confident that Alan Thicke, the witty Canadian who will star on "Thicke of the Night," has the potential to draw higher ratings and a larger audience than the eccentric, slightly bizarre Letter-man. And with the rock video fad already turning into a glut, owning a show like "Entertainment Tonight" looks a lot more attractive to WDIV than airing an MTV clone like NBC's "Friday Night Videos." OF COURSE, there are still viewers who get mighty cranky about what they perceive to.be a return to the bad old days. In addition to delaying Letterman and not showing Night Videos," Channel 4 also has regularly snubbed two interesting NBC news programs, "NBC News Overnight," with Linda Ellerbee, and the weekly magazine series, "Monitor," with Lloyd Do-byns. It never comes easy.

Jim Corno knows that. He says he fielded angry phone calls from what seemed like nearly every Detroit area fan of the soap opera, "Texas," which Channel 4 dumped before NBC got around to pulling the plug on the series. "Texas" had miserable ratings. But even with tiny A Baseball The Yankees, led by Dave Winfield and former Tiger Steve Kemp meet rookie slugger Ron Kittle and the White Sox from Chicago's Comiskey Park. New York is battling it out with four other teams for the top spot in the American League East while the Chlsox hope to hold onto their slim lead in the AL West.

So Jim Corno knows all about taking heat.

But he also knows that if Channel 50 cuts a deal to pick up "Late Night with David Letterman" and "Friday Night Videos," a portion of that critical heat will disappear. Then again, anytime a network's programs start popping up on a competing, independent station like Channel 50, both the network and the affiliate look a little silly. Not so with Channel 50. If WKBD gloms onto a windfall with David Letterman and "Friday Night Videos," the publicity can only be positive. So get ready to cue the Cheshire grins of TV50 management if the deal goes down.
