Now, the entertainment often brings in more money than the agriculture. "We have the best crop (of soybeans) we've ever harvested and the worst prices we've ever gotten," Snow said in Mason, southeast of Lansing. "It's a disaster. It's really a sin to work without making a profit." A few miles away, Joyce Rowe put it bluntly. Without attracting families to pet animals or walk through their three corn mazes, she and her husband would lose the rural Mason farm that has been in their family more than 100 years.

Ron and Joyce Rowe used to run Ingham County's largest hog farm. Five years ago, they sold the hogs and most of their land, keeping 80 acres around their house for planting pumpkins and sweet corn. Today, they charge $2 for a hayride and $1 to play on a pedal tractor track. They sell hotdogs, chips and soda. They planted 10 acres of field corn just so they could rip it into mazes shaped like a haunted house, a pumpkin and a scarecrow.

Rowe's Pumpkin Patch is small compared with many agritainment operations. "I don't like to toot my own horn that's the farmer in you," Joyce Rowe said. "But the business end of you has to take over." By Lisa Jackson The Detroit News BIRMINGHAM Mary Joan Seklar left a legacy of giving, her family says. It's a legacy she created through years of devotion to others in need. "Her joy in helping people was passed on to us.

We really picked up the torch from her, and my sisters and the rest our family try to help others," son William Seklar said Saturday. Mrs. Seklar ran medical support groups, devoted her time to church activities and also took on other interests that were somewhat controversial. "I remember when I was a kid, our mother would take in unwed mothers and guide them through their pregnancies," Seklar said from his Troy home. "This was during the 1960s and 1970s, when these women didn't have many options." A funeral mass for Mrs.

Seklar was Saturday in St. Hugo of the Hills Church in Bloomfield Hills. Burial was at Holy Sephulchre Cemetery, The Birmingham resident died from complications of Alzheimer's disease last Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, in Troy. She was 67.

Born in Detroit, Mrs. Seklar attended Precious Blood Elementary School and graduated from Immaculata High School. Her family owned several restaurants and Firestone tire stores in Metro Detroit during the 1960s. Charity work also took up some of Mrs. Seklar's time.

She was an avid supporter of the Father Solanus Group; the Capuchin Soup Kitchen and the Post Polio Support Group. She also was an active member of the Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church in Beverly Hills and the Manresa Jesuit Retreat League in Bloomfield Hills. Other survivors include two daughters, Doreen Seklar and Kim-berly Keyes; and five grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Father Solanus Guild, 1740 Mt. Elliott, Detroit, Mich.

"They can't hurt anything, and they have a good time," said owner Sue Chaffin. "Consumers, particularly yuppies and younger people, want some sort of connection to the land," Tritten said.

"So they come to the local farm to tell their kids how they remember going to grandma's farm as a kid for the summer. The farther our population gets from the farm, the more people want to go to the farm and be entertained along the way." That's fine with Snow. The suburbanites are entertained, and Snow gets to keep farming. "If I redid the farmhouse into a bed and breakfast, I think it would boom," Snow said. "You've got to get the money from the city somehow." Mike Wiard of Wiard's Orchards in Ypsilanti spends 5 percent of his time working with his crop of apples and 95 percent of his time on marketing.

"Apples are the thing that gets people here," Wiard said. "All the stuff we do in agritainment pays the bills so we can keep the fruit on the trees. "This is not the farming business. It's a whole new business." A dairy farm in Jonesville in Hillsdale County turned part of the farmhouse into a bed and breakfast for tourists wanting to experience a working farm.
