A 2B DETROIT FREE PRESS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9,, IMMJ 14 arrested as Saginaw school fight turns to brawl lectures, STOKES, MX HOI administrators believe happened: On Monday, two students, one white and one black played on opposing teams in floor hockey and threw hard body checks at each other. They continued exchanging barbs. On Wednesday, a friend of the black student challenged the white student on his friend's behalf. The two youths and more than a dozen friends of each headed for a showdown during lunch. A teacher intervened, escorting the youths toward the principal's office.

Other students followed, taunting and jeering the teacher to let the two fight. The teacher and the students and the group following passed the cafeteria as 500 to 600 students were getting out of lunch. The lunchroom students heard the commotion and soon began choosing sides, separating by race. There are about 1,500 students at Heritage; fewer than 6 percent are black. Teachers and other school officials tried to disperse the students and called police.

"We have got a riot over here at Heritage High School in a hallway," a woman told a 911 dispatcher at 11:54 a.m. "We don't have enough people to calm it down." Officers told the students to disperse but the students didn't and badgered the police to leave. Then the chaos turned into a melee. One officer was knocked down and as another tried to respond he, too, was punched and kicked by students. "Things were starting to simmer down before the cops got here," said Chrissy Schoen, 16, a sophomore.

"People just reacted to the police." About 30 backup officers from the Saginaw County Sheriffs Department and State Police soon arrived. Police moved in with billy clubs and pepper spray and brought the crowd under control. By the time it was over, two black and 12 white students were arrested. Ten were juveniles. Police denied that they had overreacted.

The state Department of Civil Rights was preparing to send a team of four or five staffers to the school to evaluate the situation and help out if needed, said Jim Horn, public information director. Free Press staff writer Melanie Eversley contributed to this report. BY MATTHEW G. DAVIS Free Press Staff Writer SAGINAW The trophy case at Heritage High School is testimony to the school's athletic prowess. And the team pictures show the Hawks' success blends the skills of all races.

So on Thursday, school officials were still trying to sort out why a confrontation Wednesday between a black student and a white student turned into a near riot a fight that saw 14 students arrested for scuffling with police. "At first, it was the blacks and Mexicans against the whites," said 14-year-old Delilah Medina, a freshman who witnessed the fracas. "But when the police got there, it was everybody against the police." No one was seriously hurt, but several officers and a teacher were bruised by punches and kicks from students, police said. On Thursday, students attended classes as normal. School officials met with parents Thursday morning and allowed students to express concerns to eight counselors.

Details of how the fight escalated into a brawl are sketchy. But here's what police and school Fatal water pit accident probed ACOMB TOWNSHIP Insurers and state Ui investigators are III trying to determine If who's to blame in the high-pressure water pipe explosion that killed four workers inside a water meter pit last Wednesday. Macomb Township's supervisor said Thursday that early clues from the insurer seem to absolve the township of any blame. "There is someone to blame. Our investigation so far shows we were not negligent," Supervisor Daniel Spatafora said.

Phone calls to private contractor Weiss Construction and the City of Detroit, whose workers were also in the pit, were not returned. He took a train to Akron, Ohio, where he stayed with relatives. He made his way eventually to Detroit with his father in 1940, the year they opened the business.

He became a citizen in 1942. During World War II, Mr. Yee worked for the Hudson Motor Car which was then building warplanes for the Navy. He returned to the family business and took it over when his father died in 1968. He had lived on Detroit's east side until he and his wife, Ruth, moved to Eastpointe and bought their first house in 1987.

Herman Yee said his father was remembered as gentle and patient. He would pile kids into the car to take them to school and sometimes translate for Chinese friends as they adjusted to American customs. He enjoyed photography, swimmming, woodworking and gardening.
